Nexstar Media Group has decided to continue withholding 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' from its ABC affiliates, even as Disney reintroduces the programme nationwide. Nexstar joins Sinclair Broadcast Group in blocking the show from reaching tens of millions of viewers across roughly 70 ABC affiliates in the US.

The move comes in response to what Nexstar termed as Kimmel's 'ill-timed and insensitive' remarks amid a sensitive national climate.

Disney previously removed Kimmel's late-night show following backlash over his comments criticising Republicans' reactions to the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Kimmel's remarks included accusations against the "MAGA gang" for politicising the incident. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr had warned of potential actions against Disney and ABC regarding the show's content.

Despite plans for Kimmel's return, criticism and boycotts from consumers and celebrities shook Disney. However, Nexstar and Sinclair remain firm in their pre-emption, prioritising local content production on their stations. Disney intends to make the show accessible via its streaming platforms, suggesting a shift towards digital consumption for viewers unable to watch on traditional broadcast channels.

Amid this controversy, Disney also announced a price hike for Disney+ effective October 21, affecting most subscription Plans for the Kimmel show have led to social media reactions, indicating some users are threatening to unsubscribe due to dissatisfaction with Disney's handling of the situation.Meanwhile, the business landscape surrounding this issue becomes more complex as Nexstar seeks FCC approval for a $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, while Sinclair explores merger opportunities for its broadcast operations.rations.

Both corporate actions necessitate navigating FCC regulations, adding layers to the already intricate broadcasting scenario. Nexstar underscores the importance of ensuring content aligns with respectful dialogue in the various markets it serves.

Key Takeaways:

  • Nexstar and Sinclair still block 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', affecting millions of viewers.
  • Kimmel is back on digital platforms after Disney's national return plan.
  • Disney+ announces price rises amidst the broadcasting controversy.

Corporate and commercial decisions have nothing to do with the first amendment. As for it being up to the viewers the viewers have already voted with their feet hence the tanking ratings.

If it was just a business decision, they could've pre-empted the Kimmel show before his contentious remarks.

BTW this is a link to all the Sinclair and Nexstar ABC affiliate stations:

Straw that broke the camel's back. BTW do you think they knew Kimmel was going to come out with a blatant lie and put the blame on MAGA for Charlie's assassination?

Nexstar must be compelled to air The Jimmy Kimmel Show. It’s essential for promoting diverse voices in entertainment. I believe that if the Democrats gain control, they should ensure that audiences have access to popular programs like Jimmy Kimmel, fostering a more dynamic and engaging media landscape.

We share a common understanding. Similar to your stance, I disregarded Joe Biden's initiatives to regulate speech on social media due to my support for him. However, I now find myself deeply concerned about Donald Trump's overt acts of censorship.

Google to reinstate banned YouTube accounts censored for political speech

Google vowed on Tuesday to offer YouTube accounts that were permanently banned for political speech the ability to be reinstated, and the big tech giant admitted that it once faced pressure from the Biden administration to remove content about COVID-19.

OMG.

Nexstar must be fascists and Nazis.

Oppressing the American people by denying them their right to watch Kimmel's bad jokes and fake laughter as ratings tank. HOW DARE THEY? There will never be another election now. Not with Trump the dictator in charge.

I'm literally shaking right now.

PS did I mention Racists?

It's people on the left screaming about 1st amendment rights with Kimmel. This is not "whataboutism" this is fact that the Biden Administration censored speech and opinion contrary to the Democrats narrative. Why is this being ignored yet the Kimmel situation for those on the left is worse than someone being assassinated.

They were attempting to tamp down hate speech,Kimmel is a comedian there’s a big difference furthermore comedy provides a good safety valve as we watch trump and project 2025 attempt to strangle the American experiment.

Challenging the origin of Covid and the claims of "safe and effictive" was not hate speech. It's challengining a narrarative. What Kimmel did was not comedy but a political statement and an ouright lie.

As it may turn out, whether the Sinclair and Nexstar ABC affiliate stations choose to again run the Kimmel show may be dependent on their local station advertisers who use the Kimmel show to reach a customer demographic not otherwise available to them.

All these recent converts to supporting freedom of speech following Kimmels suspension must be very pleased about this.   I'm looking forward to seeing them criticize Biden in the same way they have Trump to demonstrate they are not the hypocrites they appear to be.

You just answered your own demand. The  people who are paying Nexstar and Sinclair are upset over Kimmel. Look at the demographics. Cable TV is dying. Few people under the age of 30 subscribe. Even the  30-50 year olds are dropping cable. The trend its towards digital, via the internet. The people left on cable are older, skewing to age 50 and older. That's  Trump's sweetspot, the old people who have nothing better to do than to imagine conspiracies and who love to complain.

You seem angry at everything, now also the big companies. Looks suspiciously socialist, maybe even anarchistic.

Depends on the company. Disney is run by a socialist, so i dont know where youre going with this

He criticized the president, he said something bad about Charlie Kirk, he insinuated that the killer came from a conservative family, we can't have any of that, we don't want anybody talking bad about us, our people, our party  or our ridiculous president.
