Tony Blair in Talks to Lead Transitional Gaza Authority

Former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair has reportedly been involved in discussions about running a transitional authority in Gaza if a ceasefire is reached, the BBC reports.

Blair, who led the UK into the 2003 Iraq War, has been engaged in high-level planning talks with international parties to end the war and shape Gaza’s post-conflict future.

Central to the latest proposal — discussed by US President Donald Trump and Arab leaders at the UN this week — is the idea of Gaza being temporarily governed by a transitional body with UN backing and Gulf support before being returned to Palestinian control. One plan gaining traction in Washington envisions Blair leading that authority, though his office emphasized he would not support any plan that displaces Gaza’s residents.

Blair previously met with Trump in August to discuss post-war Gaza. At the time, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff described the discussions as “very comprehensive,” though details were limited. Blair also served as Middle East envoy for the Quartet (US, EU, Russia, UN) after leaving office, focusing on economic development in Palestine and the conditions for a two-state solution.

The discussions come as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas confirmed he is willing to work with Trump and other leaders on a two-state peace plan, rejecting any future governing role for Hamas and calling for its disarmament.

Recently, the UK, alongside Canada and Australia, formally recognized the state of Palestine, a move later followed by France and Denmark, drawing criticism from Israel and the US. UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer framed the move as a rejection of Hamas’ vision.

The current conflict erupted after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, killing roughly 1,200 and taking 251 hostages. Since then, at least 65,419 people have died in Israeli strikes in Gaza, according to Hamas-run health authorities, while a UN commission of inquiry has accused Israel of committing genocide — a claim Israel denies.
