Germany Arrests Hamas Suspects Planning Attacks on Jews

German authorities have arrested three individuals suspected of being Hamas members, accused of procuring weapons for attacks targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions. The arrests, announced by German prosecutors, occurred in Berlin on charges of membership in a foreign terrorist organisation and planning acts of violence that endanger the state. The suspects are due in court on Thursday, with two being German nationals and the third originally from Lebanon.

Prosecutors allege that since at least the summer of 2025, the trio has been involved in acquiring firearms and ammunition for Hamas. During the operation, police reportedly seized various weapons, such as an AK-47 assault rifle, pistols, and a large quantity of ammunition. In response, Hamas released a statement denying any links to the arrested individuals, labelling the accusations as unfounded and asserting that their struggle is confined to Israel and Palestinian territories.

These arrests are not unprecedented, as German police previously detained alleged Hamas members. In December 2023, a joint operation between German and Dutch authorities led to the capture of four individuals charged with plotting to attack Jewish sites in Europe. Those suspects faced trial in Berlin in February, highlighting ongoing concerns about such activities on European soil.

Looking forward, the legal proceedings for the newly arrested suspects will shed more light on the accusations and evidence. The case continues to draw attention to the presence of foreign terrorist organisations in Europe and their potential impact on regional security.

Key Takeaways

  • Three suspects in Berlin are linked to weapon procurement for Hamas.
  • Arrests followed by a denial from Hamas of any association with them.
  • Previous similar arrests in Europe highlight ongoing security concerns.
