Rescue operations are in full force on Mount Everest's Tibetan side, where a severe snowstorm has stranded nearly 1,000 people. Campsites located at over 4,900 metres elevation on the mountain's eastern slopes are inaccessible, as reported by Chinese state media. Snow clearing efforts involving local villagers and rescue teams have begun; about 350 individuals have already been safely ushered to Qudang town, according to Reuters.

The extreme weather started Friday evening, with heavy snow continuing to fall in the popular hiking area. "It was so wet and cold – hypothermia was a real risk," shared Chen Geshuang, a trekker who relocated to Qudang. Locals highlight the unusual weather patterns this October, making conditions perilous and unpredictable.

China's Blue Sky Rescue team was alerted as tents collapsed under heavy snow, with cases of hypothermia reported among hikers. Entry and ticket sales to the Everest Scenic Area have been halted by Tingri County Tourism Company starting from Saturday, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

The broader region is experiencing intense weather, with Nepal seeing devastating rainfall causing landslides and floods, resulting in at least 47 deaths. Moreover, Typhoon Matmo's impact in China has prompted 150,000 evacuations. Despite its allure, Mount Everest remains fraught with risks, including overcrowding, environmental issues, and dangerous climbs.

As the rescue efforts continue, authorities are prioritising safety and working to clear pathways for those still stranded. The treacherous conditions highlight the constant challenges faced by climbers and local communities around Everest.

Key Takeaways

  • A snowstorm has stranded nearly 1,000 people on Mount Everest's Tibetan side.
  • Rescue teams are actively clearing paths, with 350 rescued so far.
  • Regional extreme weather, including Typhoon Matmo, exacerbates the situation.

It wasn't that long ago when there were only few people attempting to climb Mt Everest.

Now, with advanced techniques and equipment, it's become attainable to conquer the mountain.

With that said, there are way too many people attempting to climb the mountain.

They should limit the number of people allowed to climb at any given time and perhaps raise the permit fee from 15K to 100K.....

If this is what the Everest experience is then so much for the adventure and challenge.

May as well build a tramway.

I seen a documentry once about how much rubbish the grubs leave behind up there in the Himaylayas. Unbelevable really.

Climbing Everest is nuts.

Should be classified as a psychological disorder.

I understand the desire to climb but after seeing that more than 300 have died trying to climb Everest, you would think it would be just a few thrill seekers who have a death wish would try.

With enough money and sherpas, just about anyone can climb Everest.  Most of them are just tourists.

I'm one of those guys that tends to run in the opposite direction when something becomes overly popular, spending all that time, effort, and money to climb Everest, and then having to deal with a thousand other climbers does not sound like something that I would find fulfilling.

Government should limit the number of climbers issued permits at any given point in time, it's downright dangerous to have bottlenecks high up on the mountain.
