UK Cyber Attack Crisis: JLR, M&S and Co-op Expose Costly Weak Spots

The full scale of Britain’s cyber attack epidemic is becoming clear — and it’s costing businesses billions. From car giant Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to high street icons Marks & Spencer and Co-op, a wave of digital assaults has paralysed production lines, disrupted supply chains, and exposed critical weaknesses in UK business infrastructure.

At Jaguar Land Rover, what should have been a booming September launch turned into a total shutdown. Staff arriving for the early shift at plants in Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton were sent home after a major ransomware-style attack crippled systems at the end of August. Production has been idle for weeks, with analysts estimating £50 million in weekly losses and over a month’s output wiped out.

The incident sent shockwaves through JLR’s vast supplier network, threatening thousands of smaller firms that depend on its orders. MPs warned the Treasury that some suppliers had just one week’s cash flow left, while analysts cautioned that a wave of bankruptcies could hit Britain’s advanced engineering sector.

But JLR isn’t alone. Similar attacks have struck Marks & Spencer and Co-op, with estimated damages of £300 million and £120 million respectively. In M&S’s case, hackers gained access through a third-party contractor, forcing the retailer to halt online shopping and key services over Easter.

According to government figures, 612,000 UK businesses and 61,000 charities were targeted by cyber criminals last year. Experts say many of 2025’s biggest breaches stem from a “cumulative inaction” on cyber defence — and warn the crisis is only just beginning.

Key Takeaways

JLR cyber attack shut down UK car production, costing £50m a week.

M&S and Co-op also hit, with damages topping £400m combined.

Over 600,000 UK firms targeted amid warnings of national cyber “complacency.”
