Israelis gathered nationwide to commemorate two years since the 7 October attack, as critical negotiations over Gaza continue in Egypt. The 2023 assault by Hamas killed over 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken to Gaza, described as the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust. Israel’s subsequent military offensive has reportedly resulted in over 67,000 fatalities, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed profound sorrow but affirmed Israel's resilience. He vowed to achieve his war goals, which include returning the hostages, dismantling the Hamas regime, and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat.t. UN Secretary General António Guterres emphasised the importance of agreeing to US President Donald Trump's peace plan to end the conflict.

While official memorials were delayed until October 16 due to Jewish holidays, Israelis held several ceremonies, including a televised Tel Aviv event organised by the victims' families. Simultaneously, indirect talks between Israel and Hamas resumed in Sharm el-Sheikh. Negotiations faced challenges over withdrawal maps and assurances against future conflict, with mediators attempting to bridge differences.

The talks, involving five focal areas including a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian aid, are ongoing. US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to join discussions in Egypt. In Tel Aviv, tensions remain high, with public sentiment reflecting a strong desire to end the conflict in exchange for hostages’ release, as per recent opinion polls.

The atmosphere in Gaza remains dire, with continued Israeli air and artillery strikes causing fear among residents. Hospitals face severe pressure, with limited capacity and resources. UNICEF highlights dire conditions, with mothers and children experiencing acute distress. Despite the ongoing negotiations, rocket attacks from Gaza persist, highlighting the fragile security situation.

Key Takeaways:

  • Israelis commemorate the 7 October attack while peace talks continue.
  • Negotiations face significant hurdles over territory and security assurances.
  • Conditions in Gaza remain critical, with ongoing strikes and hospital crises.
