FIFA has appointed Nualphan Lamsam, President of the Football Association of Thailand (FA Thailand), as Chairperson of its Development Committee for the 2025–2029 term, marking the first time a woman has held the position. The appointment, ratified by the FIFA Council on October 7 in Geneva, represents a historic milestone for Thai football and underscores Thailand’s expanding role in the global football community.

The Development Committee is one of FIFA’s most influential standing bodies, tasked with guiding and supervising football development programmes across all 211 member associations. Its responsibilities include designing strategic plans, evaluating progress, and managing assistance to national associations, continental confederations, and regional football organisations.

In her new role, Nualphan will report directly to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the FIFA Council. She will oversee initiatives aimed at enhancing football infrastructure, youth development, women’s participation, and gender equality in sport. Her appointment is seen as a strong statement by FIFA in support of greater female leadership within the sport’s global administration.

This is also the first time a Thai representative has been appointed to a senior FIFA committee. The move signals growing international confidence in Thailand’s football governance and leadership capacity, particularly in advancing inclusive and sustainable football development.

Alongside Nualphan’s appointment, FIFA also named Lertsakdi Pattanachaikul, a council member of FA Thailand, to the Member Associations Committee. This committee plays a key role in managing governance and fostering relationships among FIFA’s member associations worldwide. Both appointments strengthen Thailand’s presence and influence in international football administration.

Observers view these developments as a significant opportunity for Thailand to contribute to global football policymaking, particularly in areas of grassroots growth and regional cooperation. They also mark progress toward gender diversity in the sport’s decision-making structures, reinforcing FIFA’s commitment to equal representation.

The Development Committee is expected to convene in early 2026 to review existing global projects and outline a roadmap for the next four years. Under Nualphan’s leadership, FIFA’s development strategy is anticipated to focus on expanding youth programmes and advancing women’s football initiatives worldwide.
