England & Wales Pub Hours May Extend Under Licensing Overhaul

Pubs and bars across England and Wales might soon extend their opening hours, as the government reviews existing "outdated" licensing laws. This fast-track initiative aims to ease restrictions on food service and live music, potentially boosting business. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasised it’s about "cutting red tape" to enhance economic growth and revive local communities.

The reform includes a four-week public consultation allowing pub landlords and locals to voice their opinions. Key recommendations include simplifying alcohol licensing for hospitality venues, cutting licensing costs, and reducing alcohol duty on draught pints. There's also a proposal to eliminate the need for local newspaper adverts when setting up or altering licences and to increase temporary event notice allocations.

Despite government support, critics warn that relaxed alcohol rules may lead to antisocial behaviour. Sir Keir argues in favour, stating pubs form the "beating heart" of communities and contribute significantly to the economy. The new regulations could streamline processes and alleviate current pressures on pubs dealing with high costs and complex regulations.

The UK hospitality industry is in favour, indicating these changes might reduce the red tape that burdens businesses. However, Richard Piper of Alcohol Change UK cautioned that without authority support, these could become a "charter for chaos," increasing crime and antisocial incidents. Current rules allow local authorities to set specific operating hours for pubs, which this review may change.

The British Beer and Pub Association reports a steady decline in pub numbers since 2000, with significant closures predicted by 2025. Feedback from landlords highlights ongoing struggles with costs and the need for customer growth. Input from residents shows mixed feelings, ranging from cries of support to concerns about disturbances.

Key Takeaways:

  • Government reviews may extend pub opening hours, simplifying licensing.
  • Supporters argue it boosts business; critics warn of antisocial risks.
  • Public consultation begins as pub numbers continue to decline.

Uk gov:   Right we need a policy for the plebs that doesn't cost anything and will distract from the fact that we haven't started the grooming rape gang national enquiry and the black hole that didn't really exist before that now does exist and has doubled/trebled in size.

Aides:  Bring back hanging?

Uk Gov: No!

Aides: Shall we check the manifesto?

Uk Gov:  Now you are just being silly.

Aides:  Ok how about letting them drink in the pubs a bit longer?

Uk Gov:  That'll do.

October 2025: Inquiry Begins

•  Inquiry team established; evidence gathering begins.

•  Five local inquiries funded in Rotherham, Rochdale, Telford, Oxford, and Southport.

•  Government considers introducing a “Hillsborough Law” to enforce candour among public servants.

Can't see that doing anything. No one can afford to drink in the UK

My bad........🫢

Baroness Louise Casey remains the most likely candidate, having authored the triggering audit and served as the government lead non-executive director.
