What you do, and where you do it, is not that important to others. What you do is for you, not for anyone else pleasure ;-)

  • I like doing it on my dirt bike or on a hike.

What are you training for? An event? A race?

For me, because I can, not everybody can, will or do, I want and I do

I have always used the term widely, and had to check with AI

Yes, “work out” does not only mean gym. In normal English, “work out” can mean any planned physical exercise or training. It can be gym, running, swimming, cycling, rowing, boxing, bodyweight training, etc.

But there is a small difference:

“I work out” usually means “I exercise / train regularly.”

“My workout” usually means a specific training session.

“I went for a bike ride” sounds more natural than “I did a cycling workout,” unless it was planned training.

“I went swimming” sounds more natural than “I worked out swimming,” but “swimming was my workout today” is correct.

So yes, bicycling and swimming can be a workout. Gym is only one type of workout

No one i know has ever referred to cycling, running, swimming as working out

It's a workout, much better than hanging out in a gym.

I like doing it on my dirt bike or on a hike.

Anything you can do to keep moving helps. The gym with weights, swimming, cycling, walking, running, gardening, along with eating as healthy as you can, staying away from things that definitely cause problems. Today I'll walk my daughter to school and back twice, about 2 Kilos each way. The dogs will follow, getting in skirmishes with other local dogs along the way.

It's nice that you walk your daughter to school daily.

I have a dirt bike standing here now, and I have not even taken it out or serviced it since I got back home in April. Now I am leaving again in less than three weeks, so I think it will have to wait until next homecoming.

We have endless dirt road options and steep hills to climb in the jungle just outside our doorstep.

Just sold this one now. Too little used.

Plan on buying my first dirt bike when we return to the states. My daughter and her husband are riders, and there's a lot of tracks in Texas you can visit. Only had street bikes before.

That's a Honda CRF 300 dual sport? A friend of mind picked up one, I hope to get him ridding again in a few weeks.

I'm racing in the 60+C for fun. It gives me a reason to stay in shape.

Will you do moto of or off-road? For offroad the perfect old man bike is the KTM-250/300 XC-W.

Swimming is more boring than a gym

I'll eventually buy both, as I love driving in the Texas country. Looked that bike up, pretty slick.

Yes dual sport, thats the 250, I got the 300 left, and not using them as a full blood dirt bike. Which I have to agree, my few sessions on track with dirt bikes, was some of the most intensive and exhausting I ever have done.

Your heart rate will be over 150/160 the entire time if pushing.

I like gyms but haven't been to one since Covid. Was a regular for the 30 years prior but only lifted for 20 minutes a few times a week. It takes so little to keep what you have and be muscular at 60 has huge benefits. Not big but having a great weight to power ratios as well as endurance sets you up for a better quality of life.

I've exercised everyday for the last 40 years with the exception of a two or three months where moving wasn't really an option. Just recently I started taking one day off a week which is usually Sunday. My performance was dropping the last 2 years (more than age would cause ) and I decided it might be that my body needs a complete rest day. I doubt it but why not give it a try. I'm slowly getting back to where I was two years ago but have a little ways to go. I'm now running 1k repetitions in ~3:30 but I was able to do that for a 10k-15k continuously not too long ago but it is a journey and I'm possibly healthier than I was when I was faster.

Another poster above asked why train so hard. We aren't professional racers or power lifters but we can compete against ourselves and I find this interesting enough.

Thats the little trick right there, push it enough, but not to much, and I still struggle with accepting my age comes with limits of what I should do and can do without any form for setbacks.

Still diet, a good healthy balanced diet becomes even more important the older we gat, and doesn't need to be complicated at all.

I assume many swimmers get in a zone and 20-60 minutes pass fast enough and the feeling after getting out of the pool lasts for hours and it has huge long-term benefits. I'm not 100% sure because I learned how to swim in rivers with no supervision. Nothing fluid in my stroke and still I can't figure out how to glide on the surface with such ease. I would sit on the patio years ago of my GF's condo and watch Russians swim for countless laps with ease. These individuals were in great shape and seemed so happy compared to most.

I'm the type that pushes the limits when it comes to endurance :) If you are talking about weights, I definitely don't push too hard or at least I didn't in the past. I go heavy but not for many reps. You gave some advice on building my home gym. This go around with weights didn't go as expected. I went from struggling to lifting too much weight to quickly and my shoulders threw in the towel. Back to pushups, sit-ups, and pullups :)

Thats the nice thing about swimming or any repetetive work, you get in to the zone and the mind silence. Becomes Meditative performance.

Some should really put some effort to try, maybe it helps ;-)

The good thing with weights, you can fix your performance and form and avoid things like shoulder issues. I fixed my now by following a simple shoulder program found on youtube. Anyway, sorry to hear about your setback.

To each his own. The outside has the wind, fresh air(depending on the season :)), and nice scenery. Nothing wrong with the gym but I get a better high after running than after the gym. Pics from yesterdays run.

Walking or running includes nature which boosts dopamine. Pool swimming is not natural. 2 hours of bush a week improves mood according to studies.
