Need Practical Info On Banking

Recommended Posts

I am looking for information on bank accounts in LOS.

I live in the USA. I want to open an individual account at a Thailand Bank. The account will be in my name only. Checking or Savings or both.

1. Can this be accomplished?

2. What documentation is required?

3. Is there a bank that I can communicate in English?

4 Is there a bank that has online banking?

5. Do I need a Thai Address?

Any information would be helpful. In particular, anyone who has done this or is currently banking outside Thailand online.

Thank you

Gerry

1. Yes for savings account, no for current account.

2. Application in person, passport.

3. Yes, major branches of major banks. Bank branches in tourist areas.

4. Yes. Google for banks in Thailand and check out their websites.

5. Yes, unless you make it a non-resident account, but a non-resident account would complicate deposits and withdrawals, as special forms need to be filled out for each transaction.

Maestro, as usual has it pretty straight :D

I'll just add that the rules change significantly from branch to branch, if you fail at one branch of a bank don't dismiss that bank, try another branch, crazy but true :o

I had no problem opening a savings account at both Bangkok Bank and Siam Commercial, both did however ask for my work permit (no problem of course) but there are obviously issues for retirees. Bangkok Bank want a WP for you to get their (lame) internet banking service (can't say for SCB never asked).
