Kelantan Police Chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat has reiterated a call for constructing a wall along Malaysia's border with Thailand’s Narathiwat province. The proposed wall aims to combat smuggling and mitigate flooding from the Golok River into Kelantan. Despite utilizing technology like security cameras and drones, Mamat highlights the challenges in controlling illegal crossings along the narrow river, which allows quick passage.

The suggestion arises amidst ongoing concerns about border security and environmental challenges affecting both regions. Mamat has pointed out that while existing measures are in place, they are insufficient due to the river's characteristics, which facilitate easy illegal movement despite technological surveillance. Although put forth previously, the project still lacks formal approval from the Malaysian government.

Reactions have been mixed, with security experts acknowledging the benefit of a physical barrier in reducing illicit activities such as human trafficking and drug smuggling. However, other stakeholders believe that improved diplomatic and collaborative approaches might also be essential in addressing these issues. Currently, an estimated 90 kilometers of the 163-kilometer border runs along the river, presenting significant enforcement challenges.

Looking forward, the proposal awaits a decision from authorities in Kuala Lumpur. Policymakers are expected to weigh the potential security benefits against financial and logistical considerations. Kelantan officials remain hopeful for approval, emphasizing the dual benefits of enhanced security and flood prevention.

Key Takeaways

  • A proposed border wall aims to combat smuggling and prevent flooding in Kelantan.
  • Existing tech, like drones, is reportedly insufficient due to the river's narrowness.
  • Approval from Kuala Lumpur is pending despite local officials' advocacy.
