A new study has found that nearly 70% of people who experience a near-death event undergo a dramatic shift in their spiritual beliefs — a change even more common than divorce among survivors.

Researchers at the University of Virginia surveyed 167 people who reported near-death experiences (NDEs), describing moments such as out-of-body sensations, visions of bright light, encounters with deceased loved ones, or an overwhelming sense of peace. About 15% of severely ill patients experience NDEs, according to prior research.

The study revealed that the most common long-term change following an NDE was a deep transformation in spirituality or attitudes toward death. “I know I’ll never be the same person ever,” one respondent said. “Ongoing reflection and inner work are needed daily.”

While many participants described their experience as life-affirming, it also brought emotional strain. Over 20% reported divorces or major relationship breakdowns afterward, often tied to new outlooks or communcation difficulties.

Others described their NDE as a “double-edged sword” — profoundly meaningful yet isolating, as they feared being dismissed or misunderstood.

Researchers noted that two-thirds of respondents sought help from mental health professionals, clergy, or online support groups, and 78% said that assistance helped them process the experience.

The findings suggest that near-death experiences often act as a psychological “reset,” forcing survivors to reevaluate their beliefs, relationships, and sense of purpose — sometimes at a steep emotional cost.

Key Takeaways:

  • 70% of near-death survivors report major changes in spirituality or fear of death.

  • Over 20% experience relationship breakdowns or divorce after their NDE.

  • Most seek emotional or spiritual support, with the majority finding it helpful.
