Hegseth warns Putin: 'US will take steps necessary'

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a blunt warning to Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, declaring that “the United States will take the steps necessary” if Russia refuses to end its war in Ukraine. Speaking at a NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Hegseth’s eight-word warning encapsulated growing Western resolve to escalate pressure on Moscow amid renewed fears of wider conflict.

“European leaders are sending a clear message to Russia,” Hegseth said. “Now is the time to end this tragic war, stop the needless bloodshed, and come to the peace table. If there is no path to peace, then the United States, along with our allies, will take the steps necessary to impose costs on Russia.”

His comments came just hours before his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the UK due to a cracked windshield. The NATO talks — which included the Ukraine Defense Contact Group — saw several nations unveil major new military aid packages and sanctions targeting Russia’s energy exports.

Germany pledged more than $2 billion in fresh support, including Patriot interceptors, radar systems, artillery rockets, and two Iris-T air-defense systems. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Berlin would also purchase $500 million in US-made weaponry via NATO’s expedited procurement program.

Finland, Sweden, Estonia, and Lithuania confirmed they would join or expand their participation in the alliance’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s defense minister Denys Shmyhal requested £90 billion ($120 billion) in total defense funding for 2026, warning of relentless Russian attacks that have deployed “over 5,600 strike drones and 180 missiles” in the past month alone.

Key Takeaways:

  • Hegseth warns Russia that the US “will take steps necessary.”

  • NATO allies unveil billions in new military and air-defense aid for Ukraine.

  • Ukraine seeks $120 billion in 2026 defense funding amid intensified Russian assaults.

Sounds like you want war-what in hell is wrong with you? Do you really want a war between the United States and Russia just to save a corrupt fake democracy?

The earth is over populated. It is not environmentally sustainable.

A cull of USA and Russians would probably be a good thing with all things considered.

They are not exactly endangered species.

I think Trump said 7,000 Russian were being killed every week. Noy sure if that is accurate but it does help reduce global warming.

Spoken like a true psychopath. And war like that would throw the entire civilization on the planet back to the Stone Age. That’s what happens when people like you don’t think things through well enough.

Oooh, James, you missed my boat! The US shutdown impacts all public services, including air controllers and maintenance. Lack of maintenance must be what caused Hegseth's windscreen crack. It wasn't a stray stone from the dumptruck in front!

Not me, no war...between anyone. I've been aware since childhood that the US a a fake democracy (not sure there's a real one, either) when I becamne aware of capital punishment. My father took me to a demonstration in Times Square to save the Rosenbergs. I was five.

They're ALL sensesless. No long-term solution comes from violence.
