A Tesla owner was hurled into the air when a third-party charging device exploded at a non-Tesla station in Hope, British Columbia. Video footage from August 2024 displays the alarming moment when a blast sent flames skyward, followed by smoke, as reported by the Daily Mail. The shocked driver fell but recovered, while a passenger rushed to assist and appeared unhurt.

According to Technical Safety B.C., the explosion arose from the unapproved A2Z EV adapter, which the driver had used about 50 times. The incident involved a short circuit between the charging cable and adapter, leading to an "arc-flash." Fortunately, the driver escaped with minor injuries, though the car suffered burn damage, and the adapter was heavily damaged.

The report underscored that Tesla vehicles need specific adapters at non-Tesla stations and warned against third-party products as potentially hazardous. Only certified adapters are authorised for use in Canada. A2Z EV, the adapter's maker, launched a probe, concluding external faults from the charger caused the adapter to carry excess current.

A2Z pledged to maintain transparency during the investigation, aiming to enhance safety within EV charging. The company's CEO expressed concern about the incident, highlighting the importance of preventing fear around electric vehicles.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Tesla driver used an unapproved adapter, causing an "arc-flash."
  • A2Z EV's investigation blamed an external charger fault.
  • Certified adapters only are safe for use in Canada as per regulations.
