Davao City introduced the "Libreng Sakay sa Edukasyon sa Liga ng mga Barangay" program on Thursday, October 23. The initiative aims to provide free transportation for students who live far from their schools, making commuting easier for them. Photos of the program's official launch were shared on the "Lantaw ni Bay" Facebook page, showcasing the vehicles designated for this service.

The introduction of this program follows the Department of Transportation's (DOTr) "Libreng Sakay" initiative launched in July 2025, which offered free rides to commuters in Davao. Former DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon previously mentioned plans to expand and open new routes, based on passengers' suggestions in Davao City and other major locations. The success of these earlier efforts likely paved the way for the current student-focused transport initiative.

Community members and local officials have expressed positive responses to the program, highlighting its potential to ease the daily burden of travel costs for students and their families. The free rides are expected to enhance access to education, particularly for those residing in remote areas. This initiative reflects the city's ongoing efforts to support educational accessibility and student welfare.

Looking forward, Davao City is anticipated to assess the program's effectiveness and explore further expansions. By evaluating feedback from users and community leaders, the city could optimize and potentially replicate the scheme in other regions. Authorities continue to monitor and adapt the service to ensure it meets the needs of students and aligns with broader transportation strategies.

Key Takeaways

  • Davao City launches a free ride program for students to ease commuting.
  • The initiative follows a similar DOTr program for general commuters.
  • Future expansions may be considered based on program success and feedback.
