Authorities Seize Illegal Cosmetics Worth 7 Million Baht

Authorities have dismantled an illegal cosmetics operation in Bangkok, seizing nearly 70,000 unlicensed beauty products valued at more than 7 million baht. The joint raid, carried out on 30 October by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), targeted a large warehouse in Bang Bon district, where the items were being stored and distributed. Officials confirmed that a foreign investor is believed to be behind the operation.

The FDA and CPPD acted on a search warrant issued by the Bang Bon District Court following consumer complaints about unregistered cosmetics being sold online. The products, lacking FDA registration numbers and Thai-language labels, were reportedly distributed via online marketplaces such as Shopee. This warehouse had previously been searched on 11 January 2024, when officials discovered unauthorised hair dye products that had caused hair loss among consumers. Legal proceedings from that earlier case remain ongoing.

FDA Secretary to the Minister of Public Health, Jittra Meethongthanakorn, said the latest inspection uncovered a range of products that violated FDA regulations, including hair dye, sanitary pads, sunscreen and skincare creams. She emphasised that the government will take a strict stance against such offences, adding that all confiscated goods will be sent to the Department of Medical Sciences for chemical analysis to identify harmful ingredients.

Pol. Col. Weerapong Klaithong, Superintendent of Division 4, CPPD, said the investigation began after numerous complaints were received from consumers who had purchased products online without FDA approval. Police traced the source to the Bang Bon facility, which was used for storage, packaging and distribution. He confirmed that most of the seized products were imported illegally and sold without Thai labelling or proper import documentation, with evidence pointing to a foreign financier orchestrating the operation.

FDA Secretary-General Supatra Boonserm warned that individuals who sell unapproved cosmetics face up to three months’ imprisonment, fines of up to 30,000 baht, or both. Importing goods without FDA clearance carries a penalty of up to 20,000 baht, while selling items without Thai labels can result in a jail term of one month, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.

Authorities are now pursuing legal action against those responsible and have pledged to intensify inspections of imported consumer products, particularly those sold online. The FDA has urged consumers to check for FDA registration numbers and Thai-language labels before purchasing beauty products to ensure safety and compliance.
