A man in northwestern Cambodia has died from suspected food poisoning after roasting and eating lizard eggs, local police confirmed on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Russey Krak village, Mongkol Borey district, on the morning of 29 October. The victim, identified as 34-year-old Khut Ratana, was found dead beneath a hammock outside his home, just hours after consuming the foraged reptile.

According to two young neighbours, aged 10, Ratana had been drinking alone the previous afternoon when he spotted a lizard nearby. He caught the animal, skinned it, and discovered it was carrying eggs. Despite warnings from the children not to eat them, he roasted the lizard and consumed both the meat and the eggs.

The following morning, the children’s mother discovered Ratana unresponsive and alerted authorities. A post-mortem examination led by district forensic doctor Dr Sokha Munin concluded that the cause of death was food poisoning, likely linked to the consumption of the lizard and its eggs.

Local police stated that the man’s body has been returned to his family for funeral rites in accordance with tradition.

While rare, the incident has raised concerns about the risks of consuming wild or unfamiliar animal products, particularly in rural areas where foraging remains common. Experts caution that reptiles can carry harmful bacteria or toxins, especially during breeding periods.

There has been no official health advisory issued in response to the case, but local officials have urged residents to exercise caution when consuming foraged foods.

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unregulated bushmeat consumption, and the importance of public awareness around food safety in remote communities.
