The Philippine National Police (PNP) rescued 11 workers, including a minor, from a counterfeit cigarette factory in Trece Martires City, Cavite. The operation, conducted on October 31, was part of an anti-human trafficking effort at a facility located in a non-operational leisure park. Two suspects were arrested, and police are investigating potential labor law violations.

Those rescued include nine residents from Masbate, one from Pangasinan, and one from Leyte. The perpetrators allegedly recruited workers from impoverished communities in Visayas and Mindanao, exploiting them in illegal manufacturing practices. The operation was conducted under a search warrant for violation of the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012.

Acting PNP Chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. praised the successful operation, highlighting the collaboration between the PNP, Department of Labor and Employment Region 4A, City Social Welfare and Development Office of Trece Martires City, and Philip Morris Manufacturing Philippines Inc. The effort was supported by intelligence gathering and adherence to legal protocols, including the use of body-worn cameras and oversight by local officials.

The arrested suspects, identified as Tony Sia Lao and Erwin Torres Sy, are detained for further investigation at the Trece Martires City Police Station. As the inquiry continues, the PNP remains committed to combating exploitation and illegal labor practices. The rescued individuals are undergoing documentation and support processes.

Looking forward, authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and community cooperation to prevent similar crimes. Legal actions against the suspects and assistance for the victims are in progress, with a focus on sustainable measures to safeguard vulnerable populations.
