November 3, 2025Nov 3 Popular Post Picture courtesy of Khaosod Police arrested three women on 3 November 2025, accused of orchestrating a large-scale romance scam linked to Nigerian criminals, causing nearly 6 billion baht in losses. The suspects, Jutharat, 36, Janjira, 29 and Jiraporn, 32, were detained in separate locations across Chachoengsao, Nonthaburi and Betong, Yala, under arrest warrants issued by the Criminal Court on 29 September 2025. Charges include participation in a transnational criminal organisation, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering. Investigations revealed that the Nigerian-led gang targeted Thai women from 2019, using dating apps to build romantic relationships and persuade victims to transfer money. The three women were identified as key operatives in the network, recruiting others to open “mule” bank accounts to receive the illicit funds and withdrawing cash, earning 2–10% of amounts withdrawn. Police officers, led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Phatthanasak Bupphasuwan, gathered sufficient evidence to obtain arrest warrants and conducted coordinated operations to capture the suspects. Initial interrogations indicate that the women deny all allegations. Authorities are continuing to investigate the broader network and will prosecute the suspects under the law. Key Takeaways • Three Thai women were arrested for their roles in a Nigeria-linked romance scam causing nearly 6 billion baht in losses. • The suspects recruited others to open bank accounts for receiving illicit funds and participated in cash withdrawals. • Authorities are continuing investigations and have formally charged the women with money laundering and conspiracy.
