Trump Backs Cuomo, Threatens NYC Funding If Mamdani Wins

Donald Trump has waded into the New York City mayoral race, endorsing former Governor Andrew Cuomo while warning he could slash federal funding if left-wing frontrunner Zohran Mamdani wins.

In a Monday night Truth Social post, the President wrote: “Whether you like Andrew Cuomo or not, you have no choice — you must vote for him. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” Trump added that a vote for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa “is a vote for Mamdani,” declining to back his own party’s nominee.

Cuomo, running as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, brushed off the support: “He’s not endorsing me. He’s opposing Mamdani.”

Trump — who once clashed bitterly with Cuomo during the pandemic — warned that New York would get only “the very minimum” federal funds required by law if Mamdani takes office. He doubled down on the threat in a CBS 60 Minutes interview, calling the 34-year-old assemblyman a “communist” and claiming, “He’ll make Bill de Blasio look great.”

Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, dismissed the charge as “a threat, not the law,” and joked he was “more like a Scandinavian politician — only browner.” He said Trump’s remarks prove Cuomo is “the best mayor for Donald Trump, not the best mayor for New Yorkers.”

Polls show Mamdani leading Cuomo, with Sliwa trailing. If elected, Mamdani would be New York’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in a century.

Trump, a Queens native, has repeatedly moved to cut grants to Democratic-run cities, including New York, which received $7.4 billion in federal funding this fiscal year.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump endorses Andrew Cuomo and warns he’ll cut NYC funds if Mamdani wins.

  • Mamdani leads in polls, dismisses Trump’s remarks as a “threat.”

  • The race pits a socialist Democrat, a former governor, and a sidelined Republican in a volatile showdown.
