DSWD Urges Halt to Disability-Mocking Online Trends

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has called on social media users and influencers to stop using disabilities as a source of entertainment. This plea follows the emergence of the viral "Emily Blind Prank," where individuals pretend to be blind for cash prizes, prompting backlash for disrespecting persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The DSWD's appeal is backed by the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), criticizing the trend for diminishing the struggles faced by PWDs and their families. DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao emphasized that such mockery reinforces discrimination and violates Republic Act No. 9442, which prohibits ridiculing persons with disabilities.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has tasked the DSWD and related agencies to enhance programs for PWDs, ensuring inclusive development. Under a societal approach, Dumlao highlighted the need for collaboration across sectors to empower PWDs and promote their participation in nation-building.

The NCDA stressed that these trends trivialize real challenges and fundraising efforts for PWDs seeking rehabilitation and support. They reminded digital content creators and platform moderators of their legal accountability, urging the removal of mockery and vilification of disabilities online.

The DSWD encourages the public to report any content that mocks disabilities to the NCDA, advocating for social media to be a platform of inclusion and respect. Dumlao called for responsible use of digital influence to raise awareness and dismantle barriers that hinder PWDs' societal participation.
