I am a US citizen, resident of the state of Florida, 56 years old and married to a Thai.

I am currently working in Qatar. I get home leave every 2 months and normally stay in LOS for 21 to 24 days each home leave. Theoretically from what I read I should not have any problems continuing to enter Thailand on the visa exemption 30 day entry as I should not exceed 90 days stay in a 6 month period.

However, since the exact time period of the 6 month seems to be unclear, it would seem that for added insurance that I might be better off to obtain a visa. It looks to me like the one year, multiple entry non Immigrant O type visa would be my best option. That should allow me to come and go for a year as my home leaves permit as well as allow me to stay over 30 days if I ever get that opportunity.

My question is can I obtain this visa outside of my home country and what paperwork besides my marriage certificate would I need to apply for this type visa. I have been thinking of trying to obtain this type visa from the Tahi embassy in Doha. I have sent them an e-mail asking if this was possible but they have not answered my e-mail.

Also if I have to apply for this typoe visa back in the USA can I apply for this at one of the Honorary Thai Consulate-Generals? I have sent e-mail twice to the Consulate-General in Miami asking if I can apply there but they also have never answered either of my e-mails.

Thanks in advance for any suggetions or guidance you might provide.

I believe others in your position have used Doha to obtain multi entry non immigrant O visas. You could base it on visiting family or retirement. That is really the best visa for your situation. You should have your marriage certificate and copy of wife ID card/signed/dated and perhaps a letter of invite from her to be sure.

Until you obtain visa believe you are safe using the visa exempt entry as it is obvious you are not using to live here. But having a visa will speed up the immigration line.

I have obtained one year multi-entry non - imm 'O' visas from embassies in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain and from the Thai consulate in Jeddah. In each case my passport, wife's passport and ID, marriage certificate and a processing fee were required. In Abu Dhabi and Bahrain the wife was with me and originals of all the documents were available. In Jeddah they accepted photocopies of the wife's docs and of the marriage certificate. If the consistency of the application process in these three Gulf locations is any indication then Doha shouldn't be much different. Turn around is usually one day...in Jeddah dropped off in the am and picked up in the pm same day.

If your wife and her docs, marriage certificate, etc are in Thailand I recommend that they be scanned and emailed to you as a .pdf attachment...you get cleaner copies than if they were faxed.

onward and upward...
