Trump Threatens ‘Fast, Vicious, military strike in Nigeria over Christian Killings

Donald Trump has ignited global outrage — and panic in West Africa — after threatening a military strike on Nigeria, accusing its government of allowing the “mass slaughter of Christians” to go unchecked.

In a fiery Truth Social blitz lasting less than three hours, the former president said he might send in U.S. troops “guns a-blazing” to “completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists committing these horrible atrocities.” The message, delivered from behind a podium, came amid confusion over whether parts of the footage were AI-generated — but the warning was unmistakable: “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious and sweet.”

Nigeria’s government fired back within hours. Information Minister Mohammed Idris dismissed Trump’s claims as “false, baseless and divisive,” while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu denied that his country is “religiously intolerant.”

Trump’s intervention follows months of bloodshed in Nigeria’s volatile Middle Belt, where hundreds of civilians — mostly Christian farmers — have been killed in attacks by armed Fulani herders. At least 100 villagers were massacred in Benue state in June, with homes torched and victims hunted down as they fled.

Yet experts warn that Trump’s framing risks turning a brutal land war into a “full-blown religious crisis.” Malik Samuel of Good Governance Africa said the violence is driven by competition for farmland and water, not faith. “Anybody who follows Nigerian politics knows there’s not a Christian genocide — that’s an exaggeration,” he told the Daily Mail.

Still, Trump’s rhetoric has electrified his evangelical base at home and escalated tensions with an ally on the edge. Washington has already placed Nigeria on its religious freedom watchlist, and the Pentagon has reportedly begun reviewing “contingency options” for military involvement.

If Trump acts on his threats, the world’s most populous Black nation could find itself at the center of America’s next foreign intervention — this time, over religion.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump threatens military action against Nigeria over alleged Christian persecution.

  • Experts dispute “genocide” claims, warning the violence stems from land and resource conflicts.

  • Nigeria accuses Trump of spreading division, as Washington quietly reviews military options.

As Trump is clearly not a Christian, why is he concerned?
