Southport Killer’s Parents Face New Scrutiny After Inquiry

The parents of Southport child killer Axel Rudakubana could still face criminal charges, police confirmed today, as Merseyside detectives review damning evidence given at last week’s public inquiry.

Alphonse and Laetitia Muzayire, who survived the Rwandan genocide before settling in Britain, admitted on oath that they knew their son had stockpiled weapons and was plotting an attack on his old school — yet failed to alert authorities. Days later, Axel launched a knife rampage at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class, murdering seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, six-year-old Bebe King, and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar.

A solicitor for the victims’ families said they were “confident” fresh charges will follow, calling the couple’s inaction “a catastrophic failure of duty.”

Police previously declined to prosecute the parents, saying evidence “did not pass the threshold of criminality.” But that stance may now change. A Merseyside Police spokesman confirmed the force would obtain full inquiry transcripts to assess whether new evidence had emerged.

At the Liverpool hearing, Mr Rudakubana, 50, admitted he “regretted not calling police,” despite knowing his son had become violent and obsessed with weapons and gore. He and his wife confessed to bribing Axel with money to wash — cash he used to buy knives, machetes and a bow and arrow.

Families of the murdered girls branded the parents’ testimony “deeply disturbing and shameful.” They accused them of showing “no real remorse” and said their silence had “cost three innocent lives.”

The inquiry’s first phase has now concluded, with chairman Sir Adrian Fulford expected to issue his report early next year.

Key Takeaways:

  • Police will review evidence from the Southport inquiry to decide if the killer’s parents should face criminal charges.

  • The couple admitted knowing about their son’s weapons and violent plans but failed to warn authorities.

  • Families of the victims say the parents’ silence was “a catastrophic failure” that cost three children’s lives.
