Global Chaos: Cloudflare Outage Hits X and ChatGPT

A significant global outage at Cloudflare disrupted major internet platforms, including X and ChatGPT, but began easing on Tuesday. The outage, affecting a network responsible for 20% of global web traffic, started at 6.40am Eastern Time (6.40pm Thailand time) and resulted in sites being down for about an hour. A fix was deployed, yet some users might still face issues as services recover.

Cloudflare reported a surge in unusual traffic to one of its services starting at 11.20 UTC, causing disruptions as traffic experienced errors while passing through its network. The company assured users it is working diligently to restore smooth service without any errors. In Thailand, users faced challenges accessing X and other websites, both local and international, during the outage.

Cloudflare’s technology acts as a protective layer for hundreds of thousands of global companies, shielding websites from excessive traffic and potential cyberattacks. However, this isn't the first time its services have faltered. A similar incident in July 2019 saw a bug affecting its network, leading to a widespread outage lasting up to 30 minutes. In June 2022, another disruption hit traffic at 19 data centres, affecting numerous major sites for approximately an hour and a half.

This latest disruption adds to a series of recent service challenges for major online platforms. Last month, an Amazon cloud service outage caused worldwide access issues for platforms like Snapchat and Reddit. These recurring outages highlight the fragility of essential online services and the widespread impact a single service disruption can have globally, reported the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cloudflare outage cut access to major platforms globally, easing gradually.
  • A surge in unusual traffic led to disruptions in Cloudflare's network.
  • Similar Cloudflare outages have occurred before, affecting global web services.

Yea I couldn’t get through to asean now this morning because of it every thing seems ok now.

Cloudflare is the biggest impediment to internet speed out there. Your gigabit connection is irrelevant when many websites(including AN) waste 30 seconds or more every time you connect, and sometimes they even check repeatedly when you've been connected for a while. And they're really not checking much, typically only the browser user-agent.

They also check you aren't using a VPN, some sites ask cloudflare to block VPN users.

Shame that all sites don't ask to block users on VPNs, would stop 90% of trolls on this site.

I thought that you once said you used a vpn all the time - apologies if confused with someone else?

Has anyone experienced blockage from BBC when using Firefox and a VPN?  (Believe it or not, BBC does occasionally have stuff that's worth watching (well, footy at least).

I only use a VPN to when I need to access UK government sites blocked to overseas users.

No need to hide my location from AN mods, they know who I am and where I am.

It took down AN & X  , so I was forced to watch my YT channels on my smart TV ,eventually I fell asleep in my chair.
