UK Migration Surprise: Numbers Sliced by 20% Says ONS

Net migration to the UK has been recalibrated, showing a 20% dip from prior figures according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The updated count is now 345,000 for 2024, attributing the drop mainly to an increase in British nationals emigrating. Previously, migration added 944,000 people to the UK's population between April 2022 and March 2023.

The miscount of Britons leaving the country led to the original estimates being excessively high. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch remarked that immigration levels were excessively high, blaming prior administration oversight. Measures are now in place to address these issues, acknowledged during a press conference before next week's budget announcement.

Both the Conservative and Labour parties have taken active steps to manage migration, with Labour's Sir Keir Starmer proposing plans to reduce net migration significantly in the upcoming years. His strategy includes a crackdown on recruiting overseas care workers, adjusting skilled worker visa access, and increasing employer costs. Meanwhile, logistical hurdles hampered the ONS's previous processes, prompting a rebuild of their people-tracking systems for accuracy.

The ONS update estimates 257,000 British nationals emigrated in 2024, with 143,000 returning, resulting in a net emigration figure of 114,000. On the EU front, changes in methodology shifted the estimate of departing EU citizens from 96,000 to 69,000 by year's end. Migration Observatory's Dr Madeleine Sumption advises caution, as these numbers may still adjust; discrepancies can arise if people temporarily vanish from data records.

Migration trends have shown a rise due to factors such as increased work and student visas and humanitarian routes for displaced individuals from places like Ukraine and Afghanistan. Small boat crossings have been a notable trend, with over 39,000 traversing the Channel this year. In response, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood have initiated reforms to manage these figures, including recent asylum system changes, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • UK net migration revised to 345,000 for 2024, 20% lower than thought.
  • Increase in British emigration primarily drove the reduced figures.
  • Experts anticipate further updates due to potential data recording issues.

Bit like how the "recalibrated" the excess deaths numbers which changed the figures from being well into the positive to being into the negative.

Exactly.

The millionaires and the indigenous working Brits are getting out of Labour's hellhole as fast as they can, being replaced by the culturally enriching boat people like Hadush Kebatu.

Hardly a long term strategy for success.

You think that's bad? Wait until Rachel from accounts next disaster budget. For once she won't be the only one in tears.

You obviously didn't bother to read my link. Yours is the report that was debunked as based on lies and fabrication by Henley & Partners - who have clearly vested interests and conflict of interest - as explained in my link.

Go on, open your mind and give it a click. I'll paste it here for you again. It is just a factual article (which I know you are generally not too fond of). Your report is completely discredited and false.

Not only millionaires but normal Brits fleeing Labour's Britain in record numbers.

But don't worry the small boat people will make up the shortfall.

Labour ruining the country at record speed.

Just wait for the budget.

So not only do you not read other people's links that point out the fakery of your sources, but you clearly don't even read your own links!

It's an article mainly about how the ONS updated it's methodology for calculating net migration as it was being massively under reported - in terms of numbers coming as well as numbers going.

The estimated number of British nationals who returned to the UK was also revised up for last year with the ONS now estimating that 143,000 people immigrated, compared to 60,000 estimated under previous methods.

So Johnny would read that as being "people are flooding back to live in Labour's Britain!" Right?

Mary Gregory, director of population statistics at the ONS, the body has been exploring different data sources to overhaul its estimates, after the Census 2021 showed the International Passenger Survey was underestimating the number of British people abroad.

"Understanding the long-term international migration patterns of British nationals has been, and always will be, challenging due to the sheer number of British people crossing the border on a daily basis," she said.

"Very few of these will be migrants and British people don't need a visa to travel to the UK so we cannot use HOBI data to estimate migration of British nationals.

"Based on these new data and methods, it is clear the IPS continued to underestimate British emigration since 2021, and it also underestimated immigration."

Keep going Johnny, you're on a roll!!

The chronic lack of leadership skills in both the public and private sectors in the UK is turning off large numbers of Brits. Those emigrating are generally people who are financially stable and well qualified, and who seek better governance elsewhere.

Yes, at this rate pretty soon you'll be very lucky to meet a full-blood Cantiaci, Demetae or Iceni person in the UK.

Ah, the good old Remainer tactic of insulting the opposition rather than engaging in a serious debate.

Worked great during Brexit. Worked great for Hilary. Keep it up. 😄

Oh yes they are. There's plenty coming to Thailand too. A million Pounds (£GBP) is not excessive for anyone who's worked hard, has/had their own business or invested wisely over the years. Reaching 55yrs with a private pension and paid off property in the UK means a large number are millionaires. We don't talk wealth, but I can be certain that many of my ordinary expat friends who moved here to Thailand are worth more than a million.

On the plus side, indigenous Brits might be able to qualify for asylum in more free/developed countries soon due to the persecution they face from the 2 tier, tyrannical regime at home.

This German lady is already applying. How long before Brits follow suit?

Not sure if this will make much difference to most living Brits if a prerequisite is that their lineage needs to be traced back to one of the indigenous tribes of Britain. Can't be that many full-blooded indigenous Brits around.

Good luck to theis German person with her application but she might face an uphill battle. I would have thought the US has enough home-grown conspiracy theorists without needing to import more.

Perhaps the Pakistanis, Bengalis, Sri Lankans, Africans, Indians  and Middle easterners who qualify for old age and other pensions are  going to their homelands to enjoy the pensions.

Surely all these people are as British as anyone else according to the leftist handbook? So why would you refer to them as "Africans"? Surely Britain is their "homeland"?

But yes, I personally know of an Indian family that are returning to India due to the utter state of the UK right now. I can't blame them for wishing to return to something closer resembling a first world country.

Even your own link mentions individuals with 'liquid assets' worth 1 million dollars or more. But people with less may be to afford a second home (and possibly a second passport), so that staying away from the UK for more than 6 months per year is quite doable. In this case those people probably no longer have to pay tax on earnings, which is one of the main issues here, economically.

This net migration figure is not very encouraging if a large component is due rising emigration, as it means that there will be less tax revenue to fund ever-higher social and welfare costs.
