Manila Crime Wave Affects Japanese-Owned Restaurants

Numerous Japanese-run restaurants and eateries in Metro Manila face potential closure following over 20 armed robbery incidents against Japanese nationals since October last year, as reported by the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines. The surge in crime has prompted some Japanese companies to impose curfews for their employees, leading to decreased patronage in nightlife spots like Little Tokyo in Makati.

Masaaki Ema, owner of an izakaya in Makati, reported that their profits have plummeted by nearly half due to the criminal activities, forcing several establishments to shut down. The situation intensified when two Japanese nationals were killed in Manila last August, shot by an assailant who fled on a motorcycle, further heightening fear among Japanese business owners.

As a result, many companies have implemented nighttime curfews according to the Philippine-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In response, Makati police have apprehended suspects in previous cases and have stationed five to six officers in Little Tokyo nightly from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM to improve security.

Although police presence is more noticeable, business owners admit it will take time to alleviate fears. They hope customers will return and Little Tokyo will thrive once again. There has been no official response or statement from the local governments of Metro Manila cities regarding this issue. Balita is open to their perspective, reported Balita.

Key Takeaways

  • Japanese eateries in Manila are threatened by frequent robberies.
  • Profit declines and closures follow employee curfews affecting nightlife.
  • Increased police presence aims to restore safety and business confidence.
