A Chinese social media star once feared missing has been revealed to be under arrest in Cambodia, accused of serious criminal offences.

Zhang Mucheng, better known to her online followers as “Sister Orange”, was detained by Cambodian police on 13 November. The 26‑year‑old had travelled to the country earlier this month, reportedly to visit her boyfriend, a restaurant owner.

Concerns about her safety grew when she became uncontactable on 12 November and failed to board her scheduled flight back to China the following day. Family, friends and fans launched appeals on Douyin and Weibo, with some even crowdfunding to support a search effort in Cambodia.

Authorities later confirmed Zhang’s arrest, alleging she was involved in online fraud and cross‑border human trafficking between October and November. According to reports, proceeds from the suspected crimes were traced to a bank account in her name.

Under Cambodian law, fraud carries a prison term of two to five years, while human trafficking offences can lead to sentences of seven to 15 years. On 15 November, a detention order was issued transferring Zhang to Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar Prison, the country’s largest facility, where she remains in custody awaiting trial.

The case has shocked her fan base, many of whom had rallied to find her when she was thought missing. It also highlights Cambodia’s growing struggle with transnational crime networks, which have increasingly drawn foreign nationals into online scams and trafficking operations.

Observers say the trial will be closely watched both in Cambodia and China, where Zhang’s sudden fall from internet celebrity to criminal suspect has stirred intense debate.

I'm curious as to what the details are. Was she helping bring people to the scam camps that we already know about, or is this something else?

Yes, I read that. I may have phrased it poorly, but my question was intended to ask about the nature of the actual underlying criminal enterprise rather than her part in it.

Thanks for your interest, and this is the latest I can find in South Korea's "The Chosun Daily", not much but a snippet that may explain:-

Ms. Zhang is accused of conspiring with a professional organization since last month to commit crimes including online fraud and cross-border human trafficking............

However, she suddenly disappeared on the 12th, and her family reported her missing and sought help from the authorities. The area where Ms. Zhang disappeared is Sihanoukville, a coastal city in southwestern Cambodia, where Korean student Mr. Park was found dead in August of this year. This led to rumors that Ms. Zhang had been deceived by her boyfriend and sold to a fraud organization.

Upon learning of Ms. Zhang’s criminal activities, some netizens criticized, asking, “Did she use her subscribers, who supported her, for criminal purposes?” Cambodian police are investigating whether there are connections to an international human trafficking network, tracking related accounts, and expanding the investigation into accomplices.
