A Thai House committee has requested a 30-day extension to review two contentious memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Cambodia, beyond the current December 3 deadline. Chaired by Saritpong Kiewkhong of the Bhumjaithai Party, the committee is tasked with examining extensive evidence related to the MoUs, which were signed in 2000 and 2001 and pertain to land and maritime borders. Critics claim the MoUs compromise Thailand’s territorial integrity.

Nationalist groups argue that these agreements complicate border resolutions, prompting Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to propose a national referendum on their potential cancellation. However, opponents warn that a referendum could escalate tensions and necessitate comprehensive public education efforts. A working group, led by Nikorn Chamnong of the Chartthaipattana Party, is scrutinizing technical details and evidence.

Saritpong noted committee divisions due to conflicting interpretations and incomplete data spanning decades. A key issue is the dispute over boundary demarcations in highland areas, with differing views on following cliff edges versus watershed ridges. MoU opponents fear that canceling the agreements might harm Thailand’s legal credibility, while supporters cite alleged Cambodian breaches as justification for annulment.

Public debates in seven border provinces are planned to engage and educate voters, which Saritpong sees as a move towards inclusive democratic processes. He emphasized the importance of informed public participation in shaping Thailand's foreign policy, urging against letting internal disagreements become a strategic disadvantage for Cambodia, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A Thai committee seeks more time to examine MoUs with Cambodia.
  • Prime Minister suggests a national referendum amid growing debate.
  • Public debates are planned to educate voters on the implications.

The Thai pooh stirrers who are now keeping the current border conflicts going, despite agreed and signed MOUs from 25 years ago!
