A 49-year-old backhoe operator, identified as Harvey, tragically drowned after the heavy equipment he was operating overturned during a clearing operation in Barangay 1, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental. The incident occurred on Friday, November 21, when the amphibious backhoe, owned by the municipal government, capsized around 8 a.m. due to soft soil conditions. The operator was extracted from the submerged equipment and later declared dead at a hospital.

Harvey was engaged in a reclamation area clearing project when the accident took place. Investigations reveal that the backhoe turned on its side, indicating the ground's instability as a contributing factor to the mishap. This unfortunate incident was reported to authorities an hour and a half later, at 9:25 a.m., emphasizing the suddenness of the event.

Police Lt. Col. Jovil Sedel, head of the Hinigaran police, provided insights into the situation, explaining that the soil's softness was a significant factor in the accident. Such incidents highlight the potential dangers workers face in challenging environments and the need for stringent safety protocols. The community and authorities expressed their condolences and committed to reviewing safety measures to prevent future occurrences.

Looking ahead, the municipal government may conduct an in-depth investigation to identify any overlooked safety practices and offer additional training to operators. This incident underscores the critical importance of assessing environmental conditions before using heavy machinery. It also raises awareness of the need for emergency response planning in high-risk operations, reported Manila Bulletin.
