A large durian tree toppled in Chanthaburi’s Khao Khitchakut, killing a 44-year-old Lao worker. The man, identified as Supapha Serm Chaiyason, was struck by the falling tree while attempting to tie the first batch of durian fruits in the orchard. Emergency responders and police attended the scene immediately.

The tree, a nearly 30-year-old Monthong variety, was split into two main stems reaching around 10 metres high. Equipment for tying durians, including wooden poles, nylon and straw ropes and aluminium ladders, was found scattered with the fallen trunk. Supapha had been employed in the orchard for about one month and was a legal worker whose permit was due to expire the following month.

The orchard owner, Yongyut Suksai, said Supapha was diligent and responsible, assigned that morning to secure the “head bloom” fruits against strong winds. As Supapha worked, a sudden gust caused the tree to uproot and collapse on him. Colleagues attempted to rescue him, but the large and heavy branches made immediate extraction impossible.

The Daily News reported that Police and volunteer rescue teams eventually released the body and transported it to a hospital for a detailed autopsy. Authorities also notified the family and relevant embassy for further procedures. The incident highlights occupational risks in fruit orchards during high winds, especially when handling mature trees.
