Thai and Cambodian survey teams have advanced the temporary demarcation of their shared land border to 81.93%, following joint work on 21 November that added three new markers between boundary posts 53 and 54. The cross-border operation, involving 60 Thai personnel and 40 Cambodian counterparts, covered 150 metres and brought the total to 136 markers out of 166 planned. The progress marks 6.8 kilometres completed out of the full 8.3-kilometre section.

The teams collaborated across multiple Thai agencies, including the Royal Thai Marine Corps’ Chanthaburi Task Force, the 2nd Marine Ranger Control Unit, the Humanitarian Mine Action Unit 2, Development Unit 14, the Border Patrol Police Task Force in Chanthaburi and local security units from Thepnimit. Their Cambodian counterparts worked in parallel throughout the operation. The work forms part of a long-running bilateral process to verify, survey, and mark the physical border on the ground.

During the afternoon, both sides jointly compiled a daily report documenting survey and marking activities between boundary posts 52 and 59. Surveyors reported that the terrain consisted largely of longan and durian orchards, where tall trees frequently blocked GPS satellite signals. Some areas also contained dense grassland, requiring careful measurement and close coordination to maintain accuracy.

The Standard reported that temporary marker installation is a standard stage in the international land boundary demarcation process. Each marker serves as a geodetic reference point confirming the exact position of the agreed border line ahead of installing permanent boundary pillars. Accurate demarcation is essential for lawful land administration, clarity in border management, and long-term stability between neighbouring states.

Thai and Cambodian teams plan to reconvene at boundary post 58 on 22 November. The next task is to install markers TM57-39 to TM57-47, according to the jointly approved schedule. Both parties are expected to continue coordination until the remaining section is fully surveyed and marked, before proceeding to formalise permanent markers.

Key Takeaways

• Joint Thai–Cambodian survey teams have completed 81.93% of temporary border marker installation along an 8.3-kilometre section.

• Survey work faced technical challenges due to orchard trees blocking GPS signals and dense vegetation requiring precise coordination.

• Both countries will continue with planned marker installations on 22 November as part of the formal boundary demarcation process.
