A tuk-tuk driver in Ayutthaya was caught at his home on 23 November 2025 after stealing a tourist’s bag containing cash, credit cards and personal documents. The victim, Ma Rushabh Vuay, 43, from India, reported the theft while visiting Wat Lokayasutharam with a tour group. Police recovered the bag and part of its contents shortly after the incident.

The theft occurred when the tourist placed his brown shoulder bag near the reclining Buddha at Wat Lokayasutharam and went to take photos with his wife. When he returned, the bag had disappeared. Security footage showed the driver, wearing a white shirt, take the bag from the site and drive away in his tuk-tuk.

Authorities identified the driver as Mr Thitaphan, 60 and located him at his residence in Pak Kran, Ayutthaya. He admitted taking the bag, claiming he initially thought it had been left behind, but removed the cash while discarding credit cards and documents in a nearby trash bin. Police later confirmed the municipal waste collection had removed the garbage with the discarded items.

Police investigation revealed that Mr Thitaphan had a history of theft from tourists and leaving passengers mid-journey, but previous cases had been settled privately. Tour guides noted the incident damages Ayutthaya’s tourism reputation, as tuk-tuks are a symbolic attraction in the city. The swift police action, taking less than an hour, was praised for recovering the bag and apprehending the suspect promptly.
