The Department of Agriculture (DA) has launched a new registry system to enhance the management of the government’s P20-per-kilo rice program. This initiative is set to create a centralized list of beneficiaries to streamline support processes, ensuring rice farmers receive necessary aid. Initially implemented in 13 provinces, the "P20 Benteng Bigas" program will now extend to all 81 provinces nationwide.

The expanded program aims to support diverse groups, such as senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, 4Ps recipients, farmers, fisherfolk, minimum wage earners, and transport workers. Directed by President Marcos, the initiative aims to continue until June 2028, with the goal of reaching 15 million Filipino families. Earlier this month, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported rice stocks at 2.35 million metric tons as of October 1, reflecting a 3.2% increase from the previous year and a 13.6% rise from September.

In conjunction with the registry rollout, the DA plans to complete the construction of 27 new rice processing facilities by year-end. These facilities are part of the P30-billion Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund, intended to modernize postharvest systems and enhance the rice supply chain. The new infrastructure aims to alleviate shortages in drying and milling resources, significantly supporting small rice farmers.

Experts suggest that these advancements could stabilize rice supply and contribute to reduced prices in the long term. However, careful monitoring and timely updates to the registry will be crucial for its success. The DA's efforts indicate a proactive approach to addressing infrastructure challenges and improving agricultural support mechanisms.

Looking forward, successful implementation of the program requires robust tracking and ongoing support for beneficiaries. As the initiative unfolds, its impacts on food security and the agricultural economy will become more apparent. The government’s continued investment in infrastructure and farmer support remains pivotal for achieving the program’s long-term goals, reported PhilStar.

Key Takeaways

  • The new system centralizes beneficiary lists to improve efficiency.
  • Program expansion aims to reach 15 million families by 2028.
  • New facilities will modernize and strengthen the rice supply chain.
