Aussie Senate Fury: Pauline Hanson Sparks Outrage Wearing Burqa

In a move that stirred outrage, Australian Senator Pauline Hanson entered Parliament donning a burqa, prompting accusations of racism from fellow lawmakers. Hanson, from the far-right One Nation party, wore the garment after being denied permission to introduce a bill that would ban it in public. Her actions led to an uproar, with Senate proceedings temporarily suspended when she refused to remove it.

The incident reignited debates over racism and Islamophobia in Australian politics. Mehreen Faruqi, a Muslim senator, labelled Hanson's act as blatant racism. Similarly, Fatima Payman criticised the stunt as disrespectful and unconstitutional, highlighting its impact on Muslim Australians. This is not the first time Hanson has employed such tactics; she previously wore a burqa in Parliament in 2017, also calling for a national ban.

Hanson's actions drew criticism from across the political field, including from leaders in both opposition and government. Penny Wong, the leader of the centre-left Labour government in the Senate, condemned Hanson for disrespect that she deemed unworthy of a Senate member. The move comes as anti-immigration sentiments gain traction in Australia, with Hanson's One Nation party increasing its presence in Parliament following May's election.

This latest controversy sees a repeat of her provocative approach, as she later took to Facebook to justify her action, stating it was to highlight the stakes of her proposed legislation. By publicly challenging her colleagues, she aims to draw attention to her campaign against the burqa, further polarising opinions within the country, reported NBC News.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pauline Hanson wore a burqa to highlight her protest after her bill was denied.
  • Lawmakers accused her of racism and actions led to a suspension of proceedings.
  • The incident reflects rising anti-immigration sentiment and internal political conflict.

  • As someone who's spent 30+ years living and working in strict islamic countries the burka has no place in Australia.    Just look at places like Saudi where mutawas have had their powers red

  • How has this got anything to do with Islamophobia?    If I wore my full face motorcycle helmet in Parliament, would that be allowed?   She's just making a point.

  • Calling Pauline "Irrelevant" tells me your clueless! I  always thought so.

This tart pulled the same stunt in 2017.

An irrelevant attention seeker.

How dare Pauline wear a burqa. That's cultural misappropriation. Not sure where the racism comes to play.

Just look at places like Saudi where mutawas have had their powers reduced and see all the saudi women no longer wearing them.

The same goes for flying. Burka wearing women soon change into western clothes once the aircraft takes off.

It appears there are a higher percentage of strict islamists in Australia than in strict islamic countries.

Time to clip their wings too.

One Nation Party is gaining in popularity due mainly to the Australian Labor Party's immigration policies. Will gain more seats in Parliament. Not "irrelevent".

Yes, I saw this taking off from Riyadh during the first Gulf War. As we're trundling down the runway men are still standing around in the aisle smoking and burka-clad women are throwing off the burka to reveal heavy jewels and Western clothes underneath.

But immediately in front of me was a burka-clad woman sitting with a small child in her arms. She remained sitting as she manoeuvred some food that she chewed first underneath her veil to then extract it and give it to the small child. Quite an operation ...

Fascinating all the way to Hong Kong.

Wow. a fan of Pauline, no womder you have to revert to personal insults .  Her posturing hasn't resulted in any  change in policy - irrelevent.

Incidentally, my personal opinion on this garb aligns with the law in Denmark.

So are only certain Demographics allowed to wear this?

Does this mean Muslims are racist if they wear Western attire?

Is Australia following the UK down the road to a 2 tier society?

Politicions, their policies, egos, greed  and antics are fair game for most commentators on this forum.

I called Senator Hanson irrelevant, my opinion. You decided that required a personal attack on me by calling me clueless!  That is name calling of another member here!

Instead of insults and lies, try disputing my opinion with facts.

Hanson jumps shark.

This seems to mirror the clown-show antics that has been going on in the US Congress in recent times.

Yes, Australian conservatives are imitating the US clown show more and more.

Unlike them there is still some middle ground in Australia.

Read up on One Nation, the political force in Australia sunshine, then tell us their leader is irrelevant. Clueless and not credible now! Theirs another name for you!

This is not racism. The mawkish Aussies in that parliament calling it so and dissing their sisters should have a good look at themselves. What a mess.

One Nation is a conservative, right wing, populist party, in many ways similar to MAGA. In the 2025 elections they attracted about 6% of the vote and have nil representation in the 150 seat House of Reps.

In the Senate , where the Labour and Greens partnership hold a comfortable majority, One Nation holds 4 seats. Hardly a political force, certainly irrelevant.  More like a clown show with costumes.

Pauline did cook Barnaby a mulberry pie in an effort to entice him to switch to her party!

Keep the lies and name calling coming mate, it reflects only on you.

Yes. Only half the story in the article.

Pauline tried to introduce a bill banning burkas in public. She was shutdown before she could started.

That was when she went and got the burka.

The other sisters whining are no better. Sarah Hanson Young, a green senator, brought a fish into the chamber to make a point and one of the Muslim senators wore that silly tea towel thing in support of Hamas.

Go Pauline!

Her party may not be in the majority but they are certainly influencing policy.

The liberals dumping net zero is a One Nation policy and their upcoming policy on immigration will also mirror One Nation's.

'Similar to MAGA'.! Really, your frantic late nite Google search on ONE NATION found Barnarby      cooking tea, but the Maga rubbish has got to be yours alone.  🙃   I shall leave you to your homework Croc, I wont be passing on your thoughts to the principal tho!

What did old Churchill say Islam effects a man like rabies effects a dog? Sounds right to me.

Yes. frustration with the major parties has inflated their polling numbers since the election. Your figure of 18% comes from Sky which is the Oz version of Fox. The real polling numbers, while improved, are considerably lower.

However, the only poll that  matters and gives actual power is called an election.

Can see who the thumbs down pollster is now!
