Flooding across Thailand's southern provinces has resulted in 33 deaths as of November 26, according to the Emergency Flood Crisis Operations Centre. Authorities expect conditions to improve significantly in the affected regions within five days. The devastating floods have impacted seven provinces: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Trang, Satun, Pattani, and Yala, with the fatalities attributed to drowning, strong currents, electrocution, landslides, and flood-related accidents.

Prior to the floods, the region had been expecting heavy rains, but the extent and severity caught many off guard. The Ministry of Public Health confirmed the reported death toll, dismissing exaggerated claims of higher fatalities. Specifically, rumors about mass casualties at Hat Yai Hospital were debunked, with officials clarifying that patients had died from unrelated medical conditions before the floods began.

There were also false reports of a helicopter crash in Hat Yai, which Siripong Angkasakulkiat, the centre’s spokesperson, refuted. He explained that an official helicopter was conducting low-altitude operations to deliver supplies, and the noise led to misunderstandings. Rescue efforts were questioned, but Siripong asserted that delays were not due to government failure, as evacuation notices had been issued to residents.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited Hat Yai to review the crisis response and communicate with affected residents. At an evacuation center, a resident expressed frustration over inadequate aid, highlighting the challenges faced by many. Anutin acknowledged the ongoing issues, committing to stay in Songkhla until conditions are stable. Local authorities remain focused on ensuring safety and relief distribution as southern Thailand continues to grapple with the aftermath.

The Office of the National Water Resources predicts a gradual easing of flooding, although some areas, especially deep basins and low-lying regions, may remain inundated for longer. Officials are coordinating efforts to clear floodwaters and restore normalcy as quickly as feasible, reported The Thaiger.
