The Philippine National Police (PNP) is intensifying its operations against illegal firecrackers by targeting online sellers. Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered units to focus on digital marketplaces where prohibited firecrackers are being sold, especially as the holiday season approaches. This move broadens the traditional focus from physical locations to include online platforms where these products have resurfaced.

Previously, the PNP concentrated on known firecracker hubs, but the rise of digital black markets has forced a strategic shift. Nartatez emphasized the need for adaptation, noting that police are now conducting surveillance on social media, private group chats, and online storefronts. The aim is to curtail the sale of dangerous firecrackers that could undermine public safety during festive celebrations.

The PNP's enhanced strategy involves coordinating with other government agencies to tackle unauthorized online sales. Sellers are reportedly using courier services and discreet online listings to evade detection. In response, local commanders have been tasked with enforcing strict regulations and responding promptly to any violations.

Nartatez urges public cooperation in reporting illegal sales to reduce the demand for hazardous pyrotechnics. He highlighted community vigilance as critical to preventing injuries and accidents linked to unsafe firecrackers, aiming for a safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

The crackdown comes amid concerns that efforts to circulate banned firecrackers will increase as the year ends. The PNP has escalated inspections in both urban and provincial areas beyond conventional hotspots like Bocaue, Bulacan, to ensure compliance and public safety, reported Manila Bulletin.

Key Takeaways

  • PNP targets online platforms to curb illegal firecracker sales.
  • Coordination with agencies aims to dismantle digital marketplaces.
