A fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Hong Kong's Tai Po district has resulted in one Filipino worker being hospitalized in intensive care and another reported missing, according to the Philippine consulate general. The fire affected numerous overseas Filipino workers, prompting local officials to visit shelters to provide assistance, with 23 workers needing welfare support.

The incident underscores the vulnerability of overseas Filipino workers, particularly domestic workers, who face restrictive living and employment conditions. The consulate, along with agencies such as the Migrant Workers Office-HK and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-HK, is actively working with Hong Kong authorities to offer assistance and locate the missing person. The consulate has expressed gratitude towards local authorities for their support.

Agimat party-list Rep. Bryan Revilla has called for the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to establish a 24/7 assistance desk at the Philippine consulate in Hong Kong. This desk would help facilitate communication between affected workers and their families, monitor welfare, assist with documentation, and ensure those displaced receive necessary support.

Revilla emphasized the unique challenges faced by Filipino workers in Hong Kong due to employment policies like the mandatory live-in requirement and the two-week rule, which can endanger their safety during emergencies. The fire brings attention to the need for continuous, real-time support for these workers, highlighting the precarious nature of their employment, reported PhilStar.
