Thailand's Defence Minister, Gen Nattapon Nakpanich, anticipates concluding negotiations regarding the resettlement of Cambodian encroachers in Sa Kaeo before the anticipated dissolution of the House in January. The ongoing military operations, which include demining efforts, may continue if necessary to ensure border sovereignty.

Recently, Gen Nattapon highlighted the role of the General Border Committee (GBC) in the proceedings. He urged military agencies to expedite demining in Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Keao villages within Khok Sung district. Efforts have successfully completed in Ban Nong Ya Keo, while Ban Nong Chan continues with operations expected to finish by the year's end.

Temporary border markers are being simultaneously erected, aimed for endorsement in the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting early next year. Following JBC endorsement, the GBC plans discussions on resettling Cambodian encroachers. Meetings for endorsement and resettlement discussions are scheduled for early next year.

Nattapon expressed confidence that these initiatives could be completed before the January 31 House dissolution. He emphasized military readiness to proceed with resettlement operations regardless of political changes, asserting continued defense of Thailand’s borders.

Meanwhile, public reassurance about national security remains a priority. Gen Nattapon confirmed that the military remains fully prepared to defend the nation’s sovereignty amid any parliamentary transitions, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Resettlement negotiations with Cambodia are projected to conclude before January 31.
  • Demining operations are nearing completion to expedite border marker installations.
  • Military operations for resettlement will persist regardless of House dissolution.
