The U.S. military has launched its first squadron of 1-way attack drones to the Middle East, using a new model reverse-engineered from Iran’s Shahed drones. The announcement made by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) highlights the establishment of Task Force Scorpion Strike (TFSS), which represents a major change in how low-cost drone technology influences modern warfare.

The deployment underscores recent conflicts involving Iran’s one-way Shahed drones, notorious for their role in targeting Israel and enabling Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. These drones have transformed battle dynamics and prompted the U.S. military to adopt a similar strategy. The new Low-cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) drones, developed by SpektreWorks, are built upon the reverse engineering of the Shahed-136 model, offering a cost-effective alternative to manned aircraft operations at approximately 1,260,000 Thai baht each.

CENTCOM's initiative reflects a strategic move to enhance military capabilities at reduced costs. The LUCAS drones are designed for autonomous long-distance operation and can be launched using various systems, including catapults and mobile ground setups. This development leverages the increasing importance of drone technology as a deterrent, especially since Israel's recent attack on Iran weakened its missile defence systems.

Adm. Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, stated that the new task force aims to utilise innovation as a deterrent while equipping U.S. forces with advanced drone technology. The drones are expected to improve the U.S.’s military reach in the region, although details about the number of units deployed remain undisclosed.

The U.S. decision is also part of a broader “drone dominance” strategy driven by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth to speed up the deployment of cost-effective drones. The move indicates a proactive approach to countering adversaries' drone capabilities, particularly in volatile regions where traditional air superiority may face challenges, reported ABC News.

Key Takeaways

  • CENTCOM has deployed drones reverse-engineered from Iran’s Shahed drones.
  • LUCAS drones offer a low-cost, effective combat option for U.S. forces.
  • Defence Secretary's initiative supports rapid drone deployment.

War is never going to be the same anymore. Grounds troops will be there for support only. There will not be any reason to end a war should it happen. Technology will be the main killers. No more blood on peoples hands to have feelings about. Or memories of their battles.
