Miss Charm Cambodia 2025 is facing backlash from Thai netizens for allegedly adopting Thailand's tourism slogan and attire. The video introduction featuring Det Sreyneat, the current contestant, showcases Cambodia's cultural heritage, but its use of "Land of Smiles" has drawn criticism for echoing Thailand’s well-known slogan.

The situation intensified with Det's attire, which some viewers say resembles traditional Thai clothing. Comments on the Miss Charm Facebook page accuse the campaign of cultural borrowing. Despite being a celebration of Cambodia's heritage, the video has prompted a debate about cultural identity between the two nations.

The Miss Charm Cambodia organisers have yet to address the complaints. This issue follows a history of cultural tension between Thailand and Cambodia, often flaring around events and tourism campaigns. Social media clashes focusing on cultural similarities in dress and cuisine have been frequent, underscoring wider regional sensitivities.

As online discussions continue, both nations navigate complex cultural narratives in international forums, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai viewers slammed Miss Charm Cambodia for mirroring Thailand's slogan.
  • No official response from Miss Charm Cambodia on the controversy.
  • Cultural tensions between Thailand and Cambodia persist.

Thailand is not the Land of Smiles anymore.. That was decades ago... Franz Lehar wrote an operetta "Das Land des Lachelns" in 1929 and that was not about Thailand too, but China....Did Thailand copy this?

Well, Cambodia is actually the 'land of smiles'. 😊

As for Thailand, this slogan has been misleading for the past 25 years, or so...

Thankfully, as mature and educated westerners, we can escape such childish bickering right here on the ASEANNow web board.

Since much of Thai culture has been borrowed from the Khmer, I find this pretty cringe. Women are also similarly attired in Vietnam. What next, complain about the Burmese making papaya salad?

The waterfall in the video (0:06) appears to be flowing backwards. Amazing Cambodia!

Retaliation will be in the form of Gaeng Hanglay.

Saw that too.... Makes you wonder why they would put that in the VDO. Do they even realise it shows this?

Cambodia has many nice temples. If you are into that sort of thing. But who would want to go there to see a city that or waterfalls that contain brown water. I bet, Cambodia was a beautiful place many years ago when. the water was clean clear and fresh. But now it is only an eyesore and sad to even look at.

Well known but largely miss-used

Thai Criticism Over Miss Charm Cambodia Slogan Use.

Who cares, The Thais of course  they are jealous that  the neighbours are the real smilers.

If the "Land of Smiles" was an actual title or award, I think nowadays Cambodia would in fact deserve it more than Thailand.

Well presented Miss Charm Cambodia, at least Land of Smiles is appropriate, whereas in Thailand it is currently Land of Sorrows!

Anyway, smiling Miss Charm Cambodia 2025 is beautiful ! :clap2::emot-kiss: :heart_001:
