Could we live longer by not consuming preserved meats?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

During our lifetimes, most of us consume a ton of preserved meats.

I am NOT talking about salted meats, or using salt as a preservative, a technology old as the hills.

But, what about your Lebanon Bologna, or your Bacon on the Griddle?

What about Pepperoni or Prosciutto?

IF it were the case that we had bacon once a year, then this question might not even be worth mentioning.

So, the issue is HOW MUCH, and what KINDS of preservatives we eat, and for some…on a daily basis.

I stopped eating preserved meats when I left America.

I miss American meat, but not so much that I would eat it now.

These preservatives, such as sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate, and many more, have often sounded strange to me. This is why I have been happy to not worry about these for many years, about 40+ years, in fact.

Alternatively, what if the opposite is actually true?

What IF lunch-meat preservatives actually PRESERVES human life into older age?

image.png.ba3b564be4db7e8675219ca3aebc04b5.png

For example:  Might it be the case that if I were to suddenly begin eating lunch meat, then the preservatives in the lunch meat might help preserve my body, and cause me to live 10-years beyond my expiration date?

There seems to be just too little research concerning whether or not lunch-meat preservatives might have a positive impact on human longevity.

Or, probably, the food industry has already paid for such a study?

Does anybody know?

I have not had Lebanon Bologna since…around…1969.

Also, since I do not eat lunch meat, then Hellmann’s Real is not a high priority for me, either.

Hellmann’s is the best of course.

I sometimes eat it out of the jar with a soup spoon.

Quite expensive in Thailand, but it’s worth it, every bite.

How much preserved meats, in kilogram-units, do you eat, per decade?

Must be a LOT….

Right?

No doubt, it all adds up.

Best regards,

Gamma

Preservatives will make you last longer.

Studies have shown that starting a thread every 15 minutes could make you live longer.

Some cold cuts are better quality than others.

That proscuitto is one of the better ones - and also the most expensive.

I love Polish food.

It's among the best of all cuisines.

The last time I ate Polish food, it was at a wake.

Or, was it a wedding?

Plenty of great food at Polish weddings.

Especially in Pennsylvania.

Very high rates of colon cancer in old-age Aussies, all those decades of eating lamb chops, snags, bacon, steaks takes its toll.

The easy way to clear most doubts, is to read every product description and see how much protein it contains, how many additives, fat and if added fat in the process.

Not all meat that is processed is bad, but how much and often you eat it.

Smoked, cured and salted is necessary bad.

Learn how to evaluate good products from quality, and it takes a little bit understanding for each product comparing kalorier vs the makros.

Protein and carb have 4 calories gram, fat have 9

Even if I could afford it, I would not eat i myself

I would not mind buying it.

But, I would buy it and then feed to the dog or the chickens.

I am more of a fan of Thai food, actually, and also Chinese food...

During the medieval time in Europe the average life expectancy was 30-40 years.

During that time most people ate only vegetables and hardly any meat.

Today the average life expectancy varies between 70 to almost 90 years depending on the country, so I think that eating preserved meat prolongs your lifespan.

I think it was mostly the eating of antibiotics.

Also, it helps when one eats three meals per day, instead of no meals during the winter months when the harvest fails.

Glad to see that you got another one in , four in three hours is good going if you have already censored 90% of whatever your brain spouts out.

Life expectancy has never changed ...... Except in Roman times when they thought it was a good idea to run water through lead pipes, and wear arsenic and lead based makeup.

Sure bu what's their average expiry date?

Several years ago in Australia I asked a snr doctor how to avoid strokes and heart attacks.

His response was:

First: don't eat factory produced meats like ham, salami etc. Do eat fresh meat, poultry and eggs well cooked, eat some fruit and veg every day, most well cooked, some raw (fruits, carrots), reduce your coffee and alcohol intake: 1 or 2 cups of coffee or tea each day and 1  or 2 glasses of alcohol per day, and drink a lot of water.

Google says average life span of Germans is 80 and poles 78.

In the grave , not in life !

Yes. No doubt they are incredibly toxic and hard on the liver and the heart. In fact avoiding all meat can greatly extend life expectancy.

For several decades now, research has consistently found that a vegetarian diet, that is mainly made up of fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes and wholegrains, can reduce your risk of major diseases and help you live longer.

A team of researchers at Loma Linda University in the United States has shown vegetarian men live for an average of 10 years longer than non-vegetarian men — 83 years compared to 73 years. For women, being vegetarian added an extra 6 years to their lives, helping them reach 85 years on average.

The Loma Linda team is behind the ground-breaking Adventist Health Study-1 regarding life expectancy. This study is considered the gold standard in the world of nutrition because it is a comprehensive, long-term study that involves a large number of people. For 14 years, Loma Linda researchers tracked the diets, lifestyle and diseases among 34,000 Seventh-day Adventists. This Christian religion encourages a vegetarian diet and abstaining from alcohol and smoking. Adventists are ideal participants for large population studies, because most don’t smoke or drink. This makes it easier to see how their other lifestyle choices, particularly dietary choices, impact their health and longevity.

The study found that there were 5 key habits that could add years to your life. They were:

Eating a vegetarian diet,

Eating a handful of nuts regularly (around five times a week),

Being active,

Not smoking, and

Being a healthy weight.

It’s always a titillating spectacle watching you turn what most people consider a mundane grocery choice into a grand philosophical inquiry about the meaning of one's own sausage. One can almost picture you standing in front of a deli counter in Tops or Big-C, maybe Foodland, even Rimping, pondering the existential weight of Lebanon Bologna and prosciutto as if each slice carries the secrets of human longevity. It’s less about the meat itself and more about watching a man obsess and assign cosmic significance to every germ or preservative he ever encounters. lol. 😆

If they ever outlaw the 7-Eleven ham and cheese toasty, for health reasons, I'll be pissed!

Colorectal cancer up at much younger ages in the UK, and the link being made was all these ultra-processed meats....

My only occasional sin is a burger or fry-up...otherwise try to get unprocessed chicken meat/fish/beef steak.

Ok, hopefully you can provide some info to support your claims. Looks to me that they are not even in the top 8.

https://www.mappr.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/countries-meat-consumption-300x300.jpeg

According to a list from 2022, Poland is on place 43 and Germany on 60.

Body needs nitrates, and what you don't ingest, the body will make itself.  With all things ... moderation.  Far more unhealthier things to worry about, that people eat ignorantly.

WHAT are you on.....about?

Discussing the historical and typical reasons for sudden jumps in human longevity.

Food is a minor factor.

Antibiotics, and hygiene during childbirth, proper understanding of disease transmission, and such, are far more crucial.

These days though, food takes on higher importance, all things being equal.

Living 5 years longer due to a better diet is an important factor for some.

I say that I have no need to consume chemical added to my food, when I have other choices.

this is what I am on....about....

Actually the consensus says not overall . A reduction of incidence of some health issues but not longevity.  https://qz.com/91123/vegetarians-live-longer-but-its-not-because-they-dont-eat-meat

In this study that shows a significant difference not that the target group used was not quite typical .

Most doctors not only know nothing about nutrition but many are in complete denial that there's even any connection between diet and health, with the exception of fatty foods.

If you wish to make ultra-processed meats even more unhealthy heat them in the microwave.  They'll more likely lead to plaque buildup and coronary artery disease.
