Is untoasted bread on a hot sandwich a crime?

Featured Replies

I see lots of images like this showing hot, meaty sandwiches that look quite tasty, but so many of them have thick, untoasted bread like this.

Don't get me wrong, this sandwich probably tastes great, but why not toast the bread after all that?

There should be a law against this!

It's a crime vs bread

I like soft bread or warmed and it's annoying most thai places feel the need to even toast a cold salad roll

The flavour of a bacon sandwich, or a beefburger, will be massively improved by frying (not toasting) the inside layers of the bread or bun in the fat of the bacon or burger.

You may die a few years earlier than expected, but it will be worth it.

Ah, what do you do if you have not many teeth left?

You may in fact die whilst eating it but hey, what a way to go!

You obviously are unfamiliar with Delicatessen delights. Pastrami and smoked meat are usually served hot and on untoasted rye bread. Even better if it is Rye with caraway seed. And for extra delight on kümmelweck (or as the Austrians call it Kümmelbrötchen).  Hot turkey and hot chicken  sandwiches are not served on toast. Please don't tell me that you also lather your sandwiches with kewpie "dressing".

There is a time and place for toasted bread sandwiches, such as in a club sandwich or croque monsieur, or in a roasted vegetable panini.

True, not all bread is created equal. I've got some fresh crusty rye sourdough right now, delicious untoasted with some decent grilled sausages and mustard. It depends on the contents though - toast is great for avocado, roasted veggies etc which would be too soft on regular bread, but the last thing needed for hot crispy bacon is hot crispy toast.

Not unfamiliar at all, but you have drifted into a completely different category. A proper chewy rye or pumpernickel or even a solid multigrain can be delicious without any toasting. What we are looking at here is a thick tasteless white bread bun. The only way to make that kind of cheap bread even remotely palatable is to toast it. I do not care what you stack between two slices of it. You cannot polish a turd. You probably eat at McDonalds on the regular and not just for the fake processed meat but for their awful bread that they dare to call buns.

Don't like it, don't eat it, up to you.

Thank you for posting the almost correct answer. Place, time and variety.

Go to Katzs Deli in NYC and ask for Pastrami on Toast and some Puerto Rican dude who has been slicing meat for 30 years will slice you.

How could you toast a Roast Beef on Weck when you dip it it juice anyway.

However, you should toast the bread before assembling a Hot Brown.

I've experimented with both and I find that some sandwiches just lend themselves to soft, moist, untoasted bread. But typically that presumes the bread is really fresh and excellent.

If her growler looks like that photo I'd advise her to see a doctor,

  • Inch thick fresh white bread.
  • Lurpak butter.
  • Pecks salmon and lobster spread.
  • Thin sliced gherkin.
  • Thick sliced colby cheese.

Lush.

But it might look a bit like that AFTER a proper seeing to.

That was exactly my point when I replied to his post earlier. Some bread tastes great untoasted, especially if it’s made with quality ingredients, has flavor, and an interesting texture.

However, the bread I posted in the photo isn’t the type I’d want to eat untoasted, or even at all, if I had a choice. It’s just a thick mound of bland white flour. Toasting it makes it more palatable, if you have to eat it. And that was the whole point of my original post. Bread like that, untoasted, can ruin an otherwise tasty sandwich if you’re stuck with it.

I agree. But is the bread in the photo I posted the type of bread you would generally want to eat untoasted?

I remember at school, recess was a sausage roll on a bread roll. 👍

I'm surprised so many people here like to eat thick white bread rolls like the one in the photo and to have it untoasted. Not something I would want to eat. I would likely turn it down. But to each his own.

I eat those compressed German health breads the ones that they sell for $3.50 a package all over the world and it keeps forever. Toast that stuff up and put some cheese on it and butter oorah The butter just drips off cuz it's so hard

It's not something I'd eat regularly, just after a few beers it would go down well.

Reuben is my go to western comfort food here in Thailand; Rye bread, non toasted. However another Deli favorite, non toasted, a Montreal smoked meat sandwich. Can be served cold, but, steamed is usual. Side of potato salad. Rye bread would be traditional but plain white is fine.

1/10, try harder

Maybe just the terminology being used but a sandwich is just that, from when John Montagu, the 4th Early of Sandwich requested it be prepared like this for him.

A toasted sandwich, or toastie, is a different beast and it's name gives away the difference.

Both have their place in my menu.
