Thailand Faces Criticism Over SEA Games Ceremony Mishaps

The 2025 SEA Games opening ceremony at Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium on December 9 faced sharp criticism due to various mishaps, including wrong flag displays, inaccurate medal numbers, and a lip-sync error. This marked the seventh time Thailand has hosted the event, and public scrutiny began before the ceremony. Visual designer Rueangrith “Ton” Suntisuk claimed that his proposed designs for the major event were abruptly cancelled with just a month to go, leaving the new design team a limited timeline to prepare.

The organization of the SEA Games was under scrutiny long before the opening ceremony. Ton had invested seven months in design preparation before being replaced without explanation. Budget issues also sparked controversy when a 300-million-baht renovation of the swimming pool was criticized for its high costs. Despite these issues, the Thai public was enthusiastic about the ceremony, although errors quickly marred the event.

Initial problems included a drone display that incorrectly formed “547” instead of the actual gold medal count of “574.” Another significant error involved a video presentation that incorrectly showcased Singapore's flag while referencing Indonesia's hosting of the 1997 SEA Games. The official Facebook page had previously misidentified flags, confusing those of Laos and Vietnam with Indonesia and Thailand in match schedules.

Compounding the errors, Thai-Belgian singer Violette Wautier faced criticism for her performance. Her vocals in the official SEA Games theme song performance were criticized for clashing with the backing track. Violette later clarified that the performers were instructed to lip-sync, but a technical mistake led to her live vocal broadcast, impacting her professional image and reputation.

Spring News highlighted further organizational issues, such as delays in press ID card distribution, confusing foreign journalists and disrupting athlete allowances. These challenges affected several Thai athletes and added to the overall negative perception of the event's planning and execution, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The opening ceremony was criticized for multiple logistical errors.
  • Visual designer Rueangrith “Ton” Suntisuk cited sudden project cancellation.
  • Violette Wautier clarified a technical mishap during her performance.

If they get the F1 Street race - should be a proper success or major FU 😉

Probably because everything is done last minute as we are used in Thailand.. They even changed the team a month before the opening. Can you expect something else in this country where everything is always is perfect and critics are not allowed

I remember the World Futsal Championship several years ago. They built a new stadium not far from my house in Nong Chok Bangkok. I used to drive past there everyday and there was no way it was going to be ready for the start of the Championship. The standing joke amongst Thais was it was ok if you take your own plastic chair, food and refreshments. A few months on it became a weekend market, a rather expensive one at that.

"...a technical mistake led to her live vocal broadcast, impacting her professional image and reputation."

Last thing today's 'entertainers' want is to have an actual live performance...
