A recent study identified populations in Mt. Malinao, Albay, as well as in South Cotabato and Misamis Oriental. This discovery places the Philippines within the natural distribution of the species, previously only recorded in limited areas. Previously recognized only in Borneo, Bulbophyllum placochilum is adapted to elevations of 1,100 to 1,700 meters. The orchid favors growing on dead branches in open-canopy forests and low-light, mossy environments. Its distinct flattened lip, part of the species' morphology, adds to its botanical intrigue. Despite the geographic expansion, the orchid remains threatened due to its sparse populations. Researchers suggest classifying it as Vulnerable under the 2024 IUCN criteria. The collaborative research, involving the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative, the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and Ateneo de Manila University, contributes to taxonomy by including an updated species description and the first recorded account of the species' fruit. The study also amends the taxonomic key for Philippine Bulbophyllum species, identifying B. placochilum as a new entry in the Altisceptrum section. The distribution record serves as a crucial resource for biologists and biodiversity databases, enhancing understanding of the species' range. Looking ahead, experts continue monitoring Bulbophyllum placochilum to evaluate its conservation status and protect its habitats. Further studies may reveal additional populations, contributing to biodiversity conservation efforts. Collaborative research remains essential in safeguarding rare and vulnerable species within their natural ecosystems, reported Manila Bulletin.
