UK Government Hacked in October: China Suspected

Cybersecurity officials are currently investigating a breach after the UK government was hacked, with suspicions pointing to a Chinese-affiliated group. Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant confirmed that the hack happened in October and investigations are ongoing, ensuring a swift but cautious response. Although the suspects remain unnamed, the National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with government partners to assess the situation’s impact, as Foreign Office-operated Home Office systems were compromised.

Sir Chris Bryant mentioned that any security breach was resolved quickly, suggesting a low risk to individuals. Speaking to the media, he refrained from directly associating the attack with Chinese operatives. The Sun reported that visa details could have been targeted, adding weight to concerns about espionage, which UK intelligence has warned about amid increasing threats from China.

GCHQ has prioritised countering Chinese threats, concentrating on cyber and political espionage. The Information Commissioner's Office is involved in the current investigation. Expert Jamie MacColl highlighted vulnerabilities due to "old" IT systems, while Jake Moore from ESET emphasised the need for improved digital defences in government departments.

The potential confirmation of a Chinese state group’s involvement adds a layer of complexity, especially with the upcoming visit to Beijing by Sir Keir Starmer—the first UK prime ministerial trip there since 2018. Sir Keir has acknowledged China’s significance in areas like technology and trade while balancing security concerns, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways

  • UK government experienced a cyber hack in October, suspected to be linked to China.
  • Investigations involve multiple agencies, focusing on compromised Home Office systems.
  • The breach could impact future diplomatic relations with China.

Interesting. Usually the attackers are not mentioned just named as "foreign actors" although it seems there was some hesitancy from the government to outright name the CCP.

I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually blame the current Boogeyman Russia.

But I suppose having more Boogeymen is good for funding.

What would be the point of hacking a country that is on the wane, with little sway over world foreign policy anymore since Brexit.

Furthermore, do you think the Brits attempt to hack into other governments ?

They are still part of the 5 eyes spy group so will have some juice secrets squirreled away on their servers.

Someone allegedly hacked into a UK government system. The facts stop there. The whole article is just a 'fling mud at China' opportunity written by the BBC, who were 'just doing their job'.

Even if they did hack .... shouldn't the British government also be trying to hack into their systems? Would only be prudent not to attempt.

Don't they have their own security intelligence organisation.

And the government still approved tge buolding of a massive chinese embassy in the centre of London... How ridiculous!!! Typical woke behaviour.

Never ever underestimate the Brits even with the useless government they have in place right now .

Not anymore.

It used to have the power of the EU as a collective to use as a bargaining tool and threats. The UK was pretty much the defacto leader for foreign policy within the EU. They're a washed up power now - no one going to listen to them.

No1 listens to this UK government yes correct. And not  being part of the dying institution that is the EU has nothing to do with it. The UK is still the defacto leader of “Europe” for foreign policy . Look at at how they led the charge for Ukraine as an example whilst not being part of the EU.

Yes a totally idiotic  charge ...now they want to charge full steam ahead with a full scale war against  Russia..warning that British citizens must be willing to sacrifice their sons and daughters...for Ukraine !!! :w00t:   madness.

Yeh I agree on that aswell . I was just making the point of that Europe even with the UK out of EU still follows the UK’s lead . But yeh I’m with you on the decision itself 100%

We invited them in with the new embassy in the middle of London amongst other things.

What did we expect?

The naive UK government are complete mugs. Clowns. Charlatans. Damaging the UK at every opportunity.
