Trump Reschedules Cannabis, Aligns it with Common Painkillers

US President Donald Trump has enacted a pivotal executive order to reclassify cannabis, marking it as a Schedule III drug, akin to common painkillers such as Tylenol with codeine. This landmark move marks the most significant shift in US drug policy in decades, potentially reshaping the perception of cannabis both legally and medically. Despite remaining illegal at the federal level, cannabis will now be more accessible for research into its potential benefits, a change long awaited by advocates.

Historically, cannabis has been classified under Schedule I since 1971, a category that insists it has no recognised medical benefits and a high potential for abuse. This reclassification aligns it with substances that have legitimate medical uses but lower abuse potential. Trump's decision comes amid growing public support and a trend towards state-level legalisation, with many states permitting cannabis for medical and recreational purposes.

Reaction to this policy shift is divided. Proponents, like Tim Barash, chairman of the Coalition for Cannabis Scheduling Reform, hailed the move as a "fundamental shift" that could revive the 425,000-strong US cannabis industry by unlocking new talent and investment. However, opposition persists, primarily from Republican lawmakers who express concerns over health impacts and economic implications. A group of 22 Republican senators sent a letter warning that normalising cannabis use might hinder economic progress and encourage unhealthy lifestyles.

The order also involves additional measures to explore cannabidiol (CBD) benefits, instructing health officials to develop evaluation methods. The result could lead to more nuanced understandings of cannabis-related products’ impacts and uses. While some lawmakers remain sceptical due to the perceived risks of cannabis, President Trump highlighted public demand, particularly from those suffering from chronic pain and conditions like cancer and seizure disorders.

Looking ahead, this reclassification is likely to influence future legislative and regulatory decisions, potentially transforming the legal landscape for cannabis-related businesses. Whether the order inspires further policy adaptations or fuels continued debate, it marks a critical juncture in the evolving conversation around cannabis in the United States, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trump's order reclassifies cannabis as a Schedule III drug, the same as some common painkillers.
  • Industry advocates celebrate the move, but some political figures oppose it.
  • It initiates further research into cannabis and CBD's potential health benefits.

Trump is not that bad, after all!

For some of us it is always quite shocking when Trump actually does something beneficial and progressive. All I can say is kudos to him for doing this, as the war on drugs has failed miserably and it's become completely ridiculous prosecuting people for ganja offenses.

And just like that, Dems and the left are anti-weed.  🤣

100 bucks says every cannabis related incident will now be blamed on Trump the Nazi. 😀

Isn't cannabis simply a tool of white supremacy and the fascist elites? No?      Well, it is now. 😄

The real question should be is how does tRump benefit from this. He never does anything for the good of the country.

its ridiculous that the rubbish spouted by that clown is still affecting people today.

He still manages to live rent free in every prohibitionists head.

It's actually beyond bizarre, as it would be illegal to repeat the reasons he gives   for his objections to cannabis,,,,

I take back much of what I said about you, Its good to see that you are prepared to admit that, at least in this matter, Trump has done something positive,   That sets you apart from the hate mob

Thanks. Happy to offer props when they are well deserved. Smart policy.

Marijuana should not be aligned with common painkillers.

Painkillers (e.g. opiates) kill pain. That is their main task.

Mary Jane does not kill pain but in fact amplifies it - and leaves you wide open for hallucinations and demonic influence from the lower Astral.

I'll take my 500 mg of legal fizzy codeine over a stinking joint, thank you very much Mr President.

🙏

No legal fizzy codeine in the US. It's prescription only.

This should shut up the old liberal hippy  boomers for 5 minutes

My comment obviously went over your liberal head.  During President Trump's first term and his current term, if he says up, the left says down, if he says day, the left says night.  He says illegal immigrants, the left says "undocumented workers".....illegal immigrant with MS-13 ties, the left says "Maryland dad".

He could cure cancer and the left would accuse him of eliminating cancer research.

Well done and not before time.

Now let’s have a blanket pardon for all who have been convicted of Cannabis possession and return of the voting rights of those denied the right to vote on the basis of their conviction.

What you may imagine about what the Dems would do is irrelevant to the thread's topic, which is that Trump rescheduled cannabis.

Unlike your 'prediction' it's conservatives, not lefties, whining about it!

I have been saying that for some time , I even recently saw a clip of President Trump saying it, When he had finished the camera panned to the democrats present , I have never seen a more miserable bunch in my entire life , all sat there with faces like slapped arses, the vision of that odious Pelosi woman was quite disturbing in a hilarious sort of way

In the MAGA alternate universe only! You may make up whatever you want, fact is that it's Republicans, not Dems, who oppose it! 🤣

Lefties, and U R 1, complain about anything and everything President Trump does...on a daily basis.  You, and many more on this forum like you, do nothing but whine.  It's so predictable and boring.  President Trump lives in your head, et al,  for free.  Seek counseling for your tormented deranged feelings.
