Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced plans to build a border wall along the Thai-Cambodian frontier, contingent on his Bhumjaithai Party retaining power in the upcoming 2024 general election. If successful, the party will maintain policies for strengthening security forces and proceed with the wall’s construction, according to multiple reports. This project will be financed primarily through the defence budget as part of a national security enhancement campaign.

Anutin highlighted this commitment during a visit to Ta Kwai Temple and Hill 350 in Surin province, areas recently involved in border clashes before achieving a ceasefire last Saturday. The wall is a strategic initiative following escalated tensions and is part of broader efforts to ensure border security and stability.

The Thai armed forces plan to construct the wall in phases, beginning in uncontested regions such as Pong Nam Ron district in Chanthaburi province. The estimated cost of the barrier is about 7 million baht per kilometre. Additionally, there will be expenses for a patrol road built behind the wall to aid security measures.

In October, the initiative gained momentum with the support of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana, underscoring the project's significance for the safety of soldiers and civilians in border areas. This initiative is seen as essential for enhancing national security amid historical and ongoing border issues.

Looking forward, the outcome of the general election on February 8 will determine the project’s fate. If Bhumjaithai sustains power, the wall will likely proceed, creating potential changes in regional border dynamics. The election's result will also influence the broader policy direction regarding national security and infrastructure development, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand aims to build a border wall with Cambodia if Bhumjaithai wins.
  • The wall project will be funded by the national defence budget.
  • Election outcomes will dictate the project's implementation and policy direction.

Built that wall Thailand and Cambodia destroy the temples first... If 2 kids are fighting about a toy, most of the time the parent will take the toy away to end the dispute. This is not different.. No temples to fight for anymore..

Why?  Trying fixing the road between the Khun Tan range and Lamphun on Highway 11 instead.

Well, well, have we not heard this particular idea before?
15 minutes of (farewell) fame for the gifted child of Thai politics?
Populistic attempt, to be underlined with some banknotes attached to little photographs with numbers?
A repetition of some digital cash or yet another soap opera "Khon La Krueng" (half-half consumptions)?

Lets see, the building material in form of destroyed temples is plenty, the fellow floating the idea has quite extensive influence in the construction of public infrastructure and the uneducated electorate might just support this particular gravy train like all the others in the past .......... how sad!

This is a huge vote winner for Anutin.

For all his faults, he sure knows how to read his audience.

I'm surprised he hasn't attacked Indian tourists. Thais would love that.

I remember during covid he was somewhat a hero to many Thai's i spoke to for speaking out against foreigners who were behaving arrogantly by not wearing masks.

Walls/fences make good neighbors.

Somehow this reminds me of another wall that somebody else promised to build a long long time ago. I wonder if he's going to go a step further and claim the Cambodia is going to pay for the wall?

Considering this latest conflict escalated from a small fence being erected. this is a brainstorming idea !

As soon as the first brick is laid then the fighting will break out again.

Get real Thais are full of hot air !! Nothing will happen !!!
