Six Thais Freed From Siem Reap Found With Arrest Warrants

Police have identified six individuals with outstanding arrest warrants among 162 Thai nationals released from Siem Reap, Cambodia, prompting immediate legal action and expanded investigations. The group returned to Thailand on 3 January, with authorities stressing that anyone found to have committed offences will be prosecuted without delay. The discovery has underscored the importance of rapid screening to separate criminal suspects from potential victims of trafficking.

The return followed coordination to receive Thai labourers released from Siem Reap, an area linked to scam operations and illicit online businesses. According to Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelabutr, Deputy National Police Chief, checks revealed six people wanted in serious cases, including offences related to murder and online gambling. Police said further inquiries would examine possible involvement in opening mule bank accounts and other related crimes.

All 162 returnees are undergoing initial health checks before entering the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), Thailand’s central process for identifying victims of human trafficking. The NRM is designed to distinguish those coerced into illegal activity from those who acted voluntarily and bear criminal responsibility. Officials said anyone determined to be an offender will be formally charged and sent through the justice process.

Authorities emphasised that the screening is critical given concerns that some returnees may have been forced to work in scam compounds or other illicit enterprises. The operation has involved officers from Ban Plaeng Police Station and nearby areas, alongside provincial labour officials in Chanthaburi. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security is also participating to ensure welfare and rights protection.

This approach reflects Thailand’s broader effort to tackle transnational crime while safeguarding victims. The identification of suspects with arrest warrants demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency coordination, while the NRM provides a structured framework to prevent misclassification. Officials said rehabilitation and support will be offered to those confirmed as victims, including physical and psychological care.

Workpoint reported that police will continue to expand investigations into networks connected to the six suspects and assess whether further charges are warranted. Screening of the remaining returnees will continue until each case is resolved. Authorities said the process aims to allow those cleared of wrongdoing to reintegrate into society, while ensuring accountability for serious crimes.
