Etiquette for Americans when meeting non-Americans abroad ...

I consider claiming Canadian to be the nuclear option but we may be getting there.

Out of curiosity I wonder how people would react to saying I'm Canadian but with air quotes.

I see you meeting someone for the first time and shouting, "I hate Trump," while shaking hands.

During the presidency of Bush Jr I used to tell people that I was Canadian and I came out of Regina

Even people from Regina deny they are from Regina 😆

Dont bother claiming Canadian. You'll never be.

Uh, I think he did. By 2.3 million votes, or about 1.5%.

Sadly true, but there are indications that he cheated, and a third of the population did not vote. They need to implement Australian style rules.

As long as they turn the volume down and stop behaving like they are on TV and think everyone desperately wants to watch them and listen to what they are saying......I'm fine with them.

As the Irish say.....gob<deleted>es.

It's not new, Americans have been disliked by most of the world for decades. Trump hasn't made it worse, the control Israelis have over him have.

True that, they are too loud and think they are the centre of the universe

Some countries might ban Americans and Israeli, and quite rightly too. Both have democratically elected monsters more than once.

I find it staggering that many people (to be fair from every nation) can behave in a similar fashion.

If my wife and I go out for a meal I'm pretty sure no one would overhear a word we say to each other......but I look around the restaurant and the volume at which some people speak, even as a couple, is just ludicrous....."look at me I'm having a wonderful time"...F.F.S.

Still not as annoying as people in public spaces on speaker phone. Conversations are inadvertent, phone calls in the restaurant are deliberate posing.

That "attack" has been found to be a FBI/CIA, Democratic party conspiracy. Schiff may along with others may go to jail for it. Notice how quiet he and Pelosi have been since the election landslide? Try and keep up

At least we have established you're not American, yet ceaselessly blabber on about it's politics which you understand nothing about.

Great, another denialist MAGA troll. They did not get hundreds of felony convictions without verified facts, Bondi can't even get an indictment with the MAGA lies.

How can this not impact the situation of Americans abroad?

We Are Hated as a Nation. There’s One Man to Blame.

When talking with a new friend from Ireland, I was dismayed to discover just how far America’s reputation has fallen. After this week’s news, it all makes sense.

LOL! FBI/CIA? Yea, was that Ground Branch of SAD? Maybe CTC under Ayatollah Mike? Did they construct a mock-up of the Capitol at The Farm?

Who "found" it? Was it in the Epstein Files?

Seriously, fella, if you're going to spout batsh!t crazy conspiracy, try to make it more believable. You make yourself look like a complete moron with what you posted. Then again, as a MAGA, complete moron is your stock and trade.

Given the predictable now undeniably EXTREME deteriation of Trump into the most hated leader in the world, it's obviously time to bump this topic.

As Americans abroad how can this NOT be impacting you now?

Well with Thais in general they're still not going to be talking about politics to a foreigner.

However, if you're regularly encountering other foreigners from most of the world now, if you're identified as American, they're thinking about Trump.

In the media I've noticed varied conclusions about how regular Americans are regarded related to Trump. The old fashioned and very fair -- it's not you, it's your government. But more than ever I'm hearing, you as Americans elected this crazy monster TWICE! So it IS you. ALL of you. Those are two opposite extremes and perhaps the reality is mostly more in the middle.

But the social situation for Americans abroad remains without a doubt the MOST AWKWARD in our lifetimes, including old Americans.

Worse than during both the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

So, I ask again, if you're being identified as American to other foreigners in Thailand (largely excluding Thais) how are you dealing with this or are you just playing ostrich and acting as if this isn't real?

Truly sad that some people let politics infect every waking, and perhaps sleeping, moment in their lives. And the visceral hatred for a political figure seems to be ruining JTs life.

Been coming and going to Thailand for over 25 years. Met people from all walks and countries. Very few are in the camp of hating Americans or Trump as much as OP in this thread. In fact I meet lots of pro Trump people from Europe and Asia.

I think this situation is even worse now for Americans than for Russians.

Why?

Well it's well known that Russia hasn't had real democratic elections for their top leadership in decades.

So it's much easier for a Russian to project separation from the Putin regime.

But up until last time and maybe not in the future, Trump WAS elected two times in credible democratic elections.

OK, but what about Israelis? Israelis are very well used to being hated abroad. Americans in the past have at least had governments that put on a show of trying to do good in the world, promote free markers, soft power with aid and broadcasting programs, promote democracy, etc. So this experience being American with Trump who is an anti-democracy fascist now war criminal represents a new kind of adaptation for Americans abroad.

Sometimes when meeting someone for the first time it is just easier to avoid letting on that I'm American, as the questions and the astonishment are hard to avoid. How did this guy get elected for a second time, what were you guys thinking, didn't you know who he was, how come we knew who he was but you didn't?

Does that really happen or is this some sort of old age delusion? What type of garbage would make those types of assumptions when you meet for the first time?

International people will think Canada and I'm not quite there yet to be posing as a fake Canuck.

What I'm struggling with is the best way to deal with a situation where identified as American and you get that look or worse. I've been winging it so far, feeling the room, not sure there is really a better way than that.

I've never had a problem meeting someone from a different country. But then again I'm not a racist bigoted prick.

If you're American your leader is a racist, bigoted prick and your people elected him two times (he says three). So people not completely illogically may associate you with him considering he has now become a war criminal.
